Short on Vacation Time

Many people can’t always take a week-long vacation. But a memorable visit to a city where you can experience the highlights in 72 hours or less can be the perfect alternative.

The 5 selected cities below lend themselves nicely to a sweet, short sojourn where you’ll feel as if you’ve gotten your money’s worth.

Las Vegas, Nevada
Book a swanky Las Vegas hotel room either on or off the Strip. Stroll along the Strip and admire the bright lights. Catch a show, dine in style or shop like a celebrity. If you’re feeling adventurous, head up to the Fremont Street Experience and go zip-lining underneath the huge illuminated canopy. To escape the crowds, do a half-day tour of the Hoover Dam and neighboring Lake Meade.

Victoria, British Columbia
Victoria is known as the “Garden City,” and your first stop should be the world-famous Butchart Gardens. Just north of the city, this former limestone quarry abounds with statues, fountains, and dazzling gardens whose themes range from Italian to Japanese. British Columbia's capital has several key attractions near its Inner Harbour. Check out the interactive Old Town and giant woolly mammoth at the Royal British Columbia Museum. Marvel at miniature dioramas of the Canadian railway system and historical battles at Miniature World. Taking afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel reveals the British influence in this Canadian city.

San Diego, California
More laid-back than nearby Los Angeles, San Diego is amazing for animal lovers. You could easily spend a couple of days viewing polar bears, gorillas, and penguins at the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and Sea World. Check out the naval aircraft displayed aboard the USS Midway Museum. Dine in the downtown Gaslamp Quarter on local delicacies like braised rabbit to authentic enchiladas.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Although Ocho Rios is about a 2 hour ride from the airport in Montego Bay, it’s still great for a weekend trip. There are plenty of nice beachfront properties to choose from. Some are within walking distance of the main strip, where you’ll find great restaurants, shops and nightlife. Climbing up the impressively foam-swept Dunn’s River Falls is an area highlight, as is riding the bobsled-style roller coaster at Mystic Mountain, an outdoor adventure extravaganza.

Calgary, Alberta
Relive Calgary’s history with a ride on vintage trains and amusement park rides at Heritage Park Historical Village, or view the interactive galleries on Alberta mavericks and native peoples at the Glenbow Museum. Get a city panorama from the Calgary Tower, and then feast on organic game and artisan cheeses at Stephen Avenue’s upscale restaurants.

Travel Tip - Security
Carrying money on vacation is a balancing act between safety and convenience. You want to deter thieves, but be able to get to your money without doing a self-imposed strip search. Here are a few tips for carrying money safely when you travel.

Divide money in different places - Whenever possible, divvy up your cash and credit cards into multiple safe spots. If you've got all your money in one place, it only takes one time for a thief to totally wipe you out. When you go out keep some money attached to your person and some in a bag you carry. That way, if your bag gets lost or snatched, you'll still have enough to get to a police station or back to your hotel.

Keep small bills handy - It's wise to make small denominations of currency easily accessible. That way, you won't pull out the local equivalent of a $100-dollar bill when buying a 30-cent souvenir. Make money preparation part of your morning routine. As you're packing your bag, make sure you've got a variety of small bills and coins accessible for routine purchases. Stash larger bills in an under-clothing money pouch, or tuck them into a secure part of your wallet or bag.

Trim your wallet - Before you leave home, take the time to go through your wallet and take out everything except the necessities (a universal credit card and a backup, an identification card, an insurance card, etc.). You probably won’t need your library card or grocery store loyalty card when you're 6,000 miles from home. Not only will it help you travel lighter, but if your wallet does get lost or stolen, you'll have less to replace.

Stow valuables securely - Sometimes the best way to carry money is to not carry it at all. Hotels' in-room safes are generally pretty secure. If you've got an item (or a wad of cash) you're nervous about, check to see if the hotel has a safe-deposit box. If you do use a hotel lockbox, remember to retrieve your items when you leave. In a rush to depart, out of sight can easily mean out of mind. If you're the forgetful type, leave a colorful note on top of your suitcase as a reminder.

Most people think you only need common sense when packing for a vacation. But you need to include some knowledge and skill to pack efficiently, and to be prepared for the unexpected. Below are some packing tips.

1. Pack only what you know you will use. If you are travelling for more than one week, plan to wash while you’re gone. You can cut back on the number of items by packing multi-purpose clothing. For example, some items, like t-shirts can be worn during the day and as sleepwear at night.

2. Always put toiletries in plastic bags. Not only does it prevent accidental leaking onto clothes, but the bags can also be used for dirty clothes, as garbage bags or even as a makeshift umbrella. Any airtight, ziplock plastic bag will work.

3. Roll your clothes. Somehow more will fit into a bag if the clothes are rolled instead of folded. Also, if you roll in tissue paper, the clothes will get less wrinkled.

4. To keep your clothes cleaner and smelling fresher, place shoes inside old socks and then inside an airtight plastic bag. Also, place a dryer sheet (or a piece of one) in your bag.

5. Keep medications and important documents in your carry-on. On long flights or multiple stopovers, pack a fresh change of clothes. You’ll have something just in case your bags are lost. Also take a half roll of toilet tissues for emergencies.
