Alaska is definitely on my brain lately!

I’m here a little early tonight for an event focused on Alaska by land, which happens to be pretty good timing since I’m working on a 2027 Alaska trip right now that includes both cruise and land.

Tonight we’ll be talking scenic rail, Alaska’s different regions, local experiences and what’s worth considering when you want to see more than just the cruise ports.

So, since I’m here…what would you want to know about adding time on land to an Alaska cruise? Drop it below and I’ll see if I can get an answer tonight.

So when should you actually book?

It depends on the trip.

If you’re flexible on dates, room or cabin type, itinerary and even destination, you may have plenty of time.

But the more specific the trip gets, the more timing can matter.

The Alaska trip in this post is a good example. My clients need a particular itinerary to make the land and cruise portions work for everyone, and they’d really like a specific suite category. We’re almost a year out and that suite is already waitlisted.

My Cap Cana clients came to me in May for a December trip. They could have waited, but I encouraged them to go ahead and book. Since then, their resort has gotten considerably more expensive and availability has become much more limited.

That doesn’t mean prices always go up. I’ve had a resort price drop after a client booked and we were able to adjust it. In many cases, booking earlier gives us more choices without much downside to doing it.

It doesn’t mean every vacation needs to be booked a year ahead either.

Sometimes you have plenty of time. Sometimes what looks like plenty of time really isn’t.

Have a trip in mind and wondering when you should book? My consultation link is in my bio.

Cruise or land trip for the British Isles?

People ask me which is better value. What I really need to know is what you're expecting, and what you can't go all the way to England without seeing.

A port day can run eight hours or less depending on the line you pick, and a lot of what people come to the British Isles for sits an hour or more inland from the pier.

That means one thing per port and back aboard for dinner. Plenty of travelers are happy with that trade. You unpack once, you wake up somewhere new, and you don't need to worry about the navigating.

If a land trip is the better fit, you can base in one place for a few days and wagon wheel out from there. We spent twelve days across England, Wales and Scotland in May, and a good share of what we saw would have been out of reach from a port.

I book both, and the answer is usually obvious once I know what you want to see most.

I broke it down on my blog, how I would choose between them for a specific traveler. Link in the comments.
