I'm NOT going to tell you that rainy days on the Camino de Santiago are fun.
They're really not.
You can spend a small fortune on rain gear, and in a torrential downpour, you're still going to be wet.
But let me explain why this is a CRUCIAL part of the Camino experience...
Many of us have designed our lives to avoid discomfort at all costs. With enough money and planning, we're able to stay safe, warm, cozy, and comfortable...ALWAYS.
While this is certainly a lifestyle we WANT, I don't think it's one we NEED.
We need struggle.
We need adversity.
We need challenge.
We need frustration.
We need annoyance.
These moments forge deep character in us.
These moments teach us that we are tough, resilient, and strong.
These moments can generate gratitude as they gently remind us of life's many blessings.
These moments remind us that we are not, in fact, mini-gods with the power to vanquish every ugly thing life brings our way.
And they teach us to relinquish control and surrender to the moment.
..
Who taught us to avoid the rain by any means possible?
I don't know.
But if we learned it,
then we can unlearn it too.
