The Economics of a Kickstarter Project

Ouch.
Friends, always remember to proofread.

My project was successfully funded on 9 November 2013 to the tune of $64,597. That’s a hefty sum of money raised by some very generous (and most amazing) backers. Yet, five months later, after a significant typo and the last reward finally shipped, I had hardly broken even.

Coming soon to a CSS near you! Shape the content inside or around your non-rectangle shape.

"Rectangles inside other rectangles: this is what our webpages have always been made of. We’ve long tried to break free from their restrictions by using CSS to create geometric shapes, but those shapes have never affected the content inside the shaped element, or how the element is seen by other elements on the page."

http://theagsc.com/community/tutorials/so-whats-the-big-deal-with-horizontal-vertical-bezier-handles-anyway

Have you ever seen Illustrator progress shots from your favourite designers and wondered how and why their bezier handles are so obsessively arranged? We’re hoping to shed a little light on this seemingly unnecessary process. Note: this tutorial assumes a solid grasp of Illustrator & the pen tool.

Speaking of Style Guides - What about styling large amounts of data?

I went to a fascinating Meetup presentation last night on the topic of Data Viz in journalism: http://www.meetup.com/Data-Visualization-DC/events/172518312/

The graphic designer from the Sunlight Foundation (I’m really jealous of her job) presented her approach to visualizing large amounts of data. The sunlight foundation has a surprisingly large team of developers that work on data /apps / websites. So she talked about how she took their somewhat rough looking charts and graphs and turned them into something more consistent and visually informative. She shared their style guide: https://sunlightfoundation.com/blog/2014/03/12/datavizguide/

Hello Data Visualizers! Since our unexpectedly successful "Data Journalism" event last November we've been looking to continue in that vein. April 10th we're happy to present Amy C

Heartbleed: What you should know

PSA: The latest HUGE website security vulnerability: HEARTBLEED.

Experts are advising everyone NOT to rush out and change your passwords until a solid fix has been confirmed.

“The vulnerability was introduced in 2011, apparently by accident when the open source code was updated, but the error was only spotted recently. That has raised fears that some attackers may already have been exploiting it to steal information,” the Guardian reported.

Bringing Responsive Images to Browsers

Hey web developers, are you getting excited about the impending introduction of the *Picture* element?

Do you know what the Picture element is?
The picture element is a markup pattern that allows developers to declare multiple sources for an image. By using media queries, it gives developers control as to when and if those images are presented to the user.
Sample Markup for `picture`

(explanation via http://responsiveimages.org/)

After almost three years in pursuit of a standardized solution to the problem of responsive images, the Responsive Images Community Group is excited to announce that the picture element is officially coming to a browser near you. Once it lands, we’ll see the trend toward massive, bandwidth-heavy res...
