A true trailblazer!

Commander Jeanine McIntosh Menze broke a 215-year barrier in Coast Guard aviation by becoming the first Black female pilot in United States Coast Guard history.

Commander Jeanine McIntosh Menze joined the United States Coast Guard in 2003 as an officer. She worked through a system where she was often the only Black woman in her training spaces. She carried that pressure quietly while advancing through flight school. On June 24, 2005, she earned her Wings of Gold and became the first African American female Coast Guard aviator. Her achievement marked a historic shift in military aviation representation.

She went on to fly the Lockheed HC-130 Hercules aircraft on rescue and service missions across the Pacific. Her work included operations tied to Hurricane Katrina response efforts. The milestone came after 215 years without a Black woman serving as a Coast Guard pilot. Her presence in the cockpit showed what persistence looks like inside a demanding system with limited representation at the time.

Beyond her missions, Commander Menze later became a mentor to younger service members entering aviation. She helped guide others who faced similar environments where they often stood out as the only one in the room. Her career stands as a record of steady progress and quiet strength. Her legacy continues to reflect expanded opportunity within Coast Guard aviation and beyond.
