Hippopotamuses 🦛 are semi-aquatic mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are the third-largest living land mammals, recognized by their barrel-shaped bodies and massive jaws. Despite their chubby appearance, they are agile and formidable creatures.
Incredible Size: Adult males can weigh up to 3,200 kg (7,000 lbs). Females weigh between 650 to 2,300 kg.
Naturally Buoyant: They do not swim. Instead, they are so dense that they walk along the riverbeds.
Built-In Scuba Gear: Their eyes, ears, and nostrils are placed high on their skulls. This allows them to stay mostly submerged while keeping watch. They can hold their breath for up to five minutes.
“Blood Sweat”: Hippos don’t sweat. Instead, they secrete an oily, reddish-pink fluid. This liquid is actually a natural sunscreen and moisturizer.
Cetacean Cousins: Despite looking like giant pigs, their closest living genetic relatives are whales, dolphins, and porpoises.
