These dates are likely to see higher passenger demand, particularly on popular ETS routes such as Kuala Lumpur–Penang, Kuala Lumpur–Ipoh, and Kuala Lumpur–Padang Besar, as well as long-distance KTM Intercity services to the East Coast and southern Malaysia.

🇨🇳 Construction of the Dali–Ruili Railway in Yunnan, widely described as the world’s toughest railway project, is progressing toward full completion in 2028. The 330-kilometre line, the first to cross the rugged Hengduan Mountains, has faced extreme engineering challenges, including high geothermal heat, heavy groundwater inflows and unstable rock, particularly in the Gaoligong Mountain Tunnel. Once operational, the railway will cut travel time between Kunming and Ruili from about nine hours to 4.5 hours and form part of the China–Myanmar international rail corridor, strengthening links with Southeast and South Asia.

Construction of the Baoshan–Ruili section of the Dali–Ruili Railway in Yunnan province has made significant progress, putting the line on track for full operation by 2028, according to Guoshizhitongche, a social media account affiliated with China News Service.

🇱🇦 Some recent photos showing what it is like at Luang Prabang (Laos-China) Station. There are quite a few shops selling drinks and snacks. There’s also free hot water. If you have a Business Class ticket, head to the VIP lounge in the far right corner. You also get priority boarding.

When you arrive here, there are vans that will take you into Luang Prabang for 40,000 kip.

🇹🇭🇱🇦 THAILAND TO LAOS BY TRAIN:

These are your train options for going from Bangkok to Vientiane by train. Rapid No. 133 is the international train that goes between these two capitals. But there are only two sleeper carriages and so it sells out fast. An alternative is to take SRT’s flagship CNR sleeper Special Express No. 25 that departs an hour earlier. Then, after a leisurely breakfast in Nong Khai, switch to No. 133 to cross the border.

Immigration for Thailand is done at Nong Khai Station and for Laos at Vientiane (Khamsavath) Station. You will find a foreign exchange booth there as well as vendors selling SIM cards at Vientiane (Khamsavath) station. There is a public bus to the morning market station that departs at 9:30 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. Ticket is 20,000 kip or 40 baht. From there you can catch the 11:20 a.m. bus to the Laos-China Station or use the LOCA app to book a taxi. Bus is 25,000 kip and taxi is about 200,000 kip.

I will be posting a full review of all of these trains soon. But in the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments below.

🇱🇦 Photos taken today showing the atmosphere at Vientiane Railway Station (Laos-China Highspeed Train). To enter the station, you have to first show your passport and ticket. Then go through security where your bags are x-rayed. Then you are in the large waiting area. If you have Business Class tickets, then you can wait in VIP lounger where there are more comfortable seats, tea, coffee and water, and private toilets. There are a number of shops scattered around the large waiting area but don’t expect too much. Best to bring your own food. However, there is free hot and cold water available both at the station and on the train. Boarding takes place around 20 minutes before departure. To go through the ticket turnstile, they will scan the QR code on your physical ticket or e-ticket.
