✨ A miniature tunnelling machine. A train handgrip. And a sleek robot. ✨

These three symbols marked the collaboration formalised between and Guangzhou Metro Group (GMG) on 3 June. 🤝

GMG operates China’s third-largest rail network and is widely recognised for its innovation, strong safety culture, and high reliability standards. 💯

On Wednesday, SMRT and GMG signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Teaming Agreement. The two partners also launched the SMRT-Guangzhou Metro Rail Innovation Laboratory at Bishan Depot – where they will jointly develop solutions to enhance rail reliability and elevate the commuter experience. 💪

At the signing ceremony, SMRT Chairman Mr Seah Moon Ming presented GMG Chairman Mr Liu Zhicheng with a train handgrip, symbolising support and safety. In return, Mr Liu gifted a miniature tunnelling machine, representing SMRT’s forward-looking vision and a shared ambition for a dynamic, high-powered partnership. 🌟

We were also honoured to have Senior Minister of State Ms Low Yen Ling and 中国驻新加坡大使曹忠明 Chinese Ambassador to Singapore Cao Zhongming join us for the ceremony, along with a visit to Depot 4.0.

During the tour, they met our new AI-enabled “colleague”– the Intelligent Train Inspection Robot, unveiled at Depot 4.0. Equipped with autonomous navigation, dual robotic arms, and AI-driven image analytics, the robot inspects the underside of trains to identify faults early, improving consistency and enabling preventive maintenance. 🤖

Beyond rail technology, our collaboration also extends to business innovation. Following a successful partnership in Singapore, SMRT’s business arm, Stellar Lifestyle, signed a new tripartite MoU with Guangzhou Metro Resources and IJOOZ, to bring the smart juice machines to new markets. We look forward to strengthening our partnerships and supporting Singapore SMEs in expanding overseas. 🌎

We won!

Congrats STRIDES Technologies (ST) for bagging the Recognition of Excellence Award from OpenGov Asia — for the transformation of Bishan Depot's overhaul workshop. 🎉

What does Depot 4.0 mean for us? By bringing new machines, AI, and smart tools into our maintenance workshops, we're modernising the depot to keep pace with the demands of a growing rail network and transforming how we work. As Andy Chiang, Managing Director of ST, highlighted in his acceptance speech, the big step into tech isn't just about improving efficiency — it also provides our workers the valuable opportunity to upskill and gain confidence in working with tech. 📈

A massive shoutout to our partners Land Transport Authority – We Keep Your World Moving and CRRC Corporation Ltd., and the dedicated ground teams who turned ideas into reality. 🙌

🇻🇳 🇸🇬 A Historic Visit to Depot 4.0

🤝 What an honour it was to receive General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Tô Lâm, to SMRT’s Depot 4.0 during his state visit to Singapore.

At the state banquet to welcome the Vietnamese delegation, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam captured the spirit of both countries — Vietnam and Singapore have similar outlooks on prioritising human capital, embracing openness to the world, and committing to continued renewal.

💡 That also sums up Depot 4.0 in a sentence. Depot 4.0 is a transformative initiative to turn Singapore’s oldest train depot into a smart maintenance facility.

🤖 During the tour, President Tô Lâm was especially drawn to our automation process. He told the accompanying Vietnamese media that Singapore could be a valuable reference model as it speeds up its urban rail ambitions, and noted that digital transformation could be key to getting there.

🚆 Joining the visit was Mrs Josephine Teo, Minister for Digital Development and Information. To mark the occasion, SMRT Chairman Seah Moon Ming presented President Tô Lâm with a special 1/150 scale model of our upgraded C151B train with its distinctive red-and-white livery.

🙏 Thank you to President Tô Lâm and the Vietnamese delegation for an unforgettable visit.

👏 And special thanks to our colleagues Jessie Nguyen Thuy Ngoc and Gan Li Cin for being our able Vietnamese guides.
