📈 Preparing for the Future Surge in Air Cargo Demand…
Changi Airport Terminal 5 (T5) officially started construction on 14 May 2025. This mega terminal will strengthen Changi Airport’s position as a leading global air hub.
T5 will be connected to the existing terminals, allowing the airport to operate as one fully integrated hub. It is designed to handle about 50 million passengers per year, with the first phase expected to open in the mid-2030s.
The terminal will be divided into three sections – T5A, T5B and T5C, located about 1 km apart. A third runway is also planned to be operational before T5 opens.
For the first time, Changi Airport will have a ground transport centre inside the terminal, integrating train, bus, taxi and other transport services, making it easier to travel to and from the airport.
As air travel in the Asia-Pacific region continues to grow rapidly, T5 will provide the additional capacity needed to support this long-term growth.
The terminal will use advanced technology and automation to improve efficiency, streamline operations, and handle rising global travel demand.
Impact on Cargo Handling
Terminal 5 will also greatly improve cargo handling at Changi Airport:
• Higher Capacity: More passenger flights mean increased cargo space and volume.
• Better Connectivity: Seamless integration with existing terminals will improve cargo transfer and operations.
• Faster Processing: A drive-through cargo centre will reduce cargo processing time by about 20%.
• Future-Ready: T5 is part of the Changi East Development, including an industrial zone for airfreight, express cargo and maintenance services.
• Smart Technology: Use of AI and digital systems such as truck slot booking and automated vehicles will improve efficiency.
These developments support Changi Airport’s long-term vision to remain a world-class aviation and cargo hub.
