The sheath for a knife serves to avoid the unwanted action of sharp parts of the weapon, which can cause injury to people and animals, as well as damage to surrounding objects during storage and transportation. The scabbard also performs the task of protecting the weapons contained in them from the negative effects of the environment (for example, rusting). In addition, the scabbard often serves as part of clothing (especially festive), and when storing especially valuable or skillfully made weapons in it, the scabbard can be decorated with inserts of precious metals and stones, that is, it is a work of weapons and applied art.
In the manufacture of the scabbard, we use natural leather.
Typically in the design provides loops, rings or ligaments that allow you to attach the scabbard to clothing or a belt (belt). At the bottom of the scabbard, inserted into a buterol (tip). In the Middle Ages in Europe, the scabbard of especially large specimens of bladed weapons was firmly attached to a special leather device intended for this (carrying belt - a harness). A scabbard with a weapon was placed at the hip or shoulder of a warrior. In later times, the scabbard was equipped with a special fuse, which made it possible to avoid unwanted and unexpected release of the blade from the scabbard.
