History of USE-IT
Te first USE-IT was founded in 1971, in Copenhagen. T
he Danish capital, that year, was swarming with beautiful people: hippie travelers from all over the world, who slept wherever they found a place, in parks, on benches... Mayor Andersen decided something should be done about it. The goal was simple, to give answers for these travelers main questions:
Where to sleep? Where to meet other people? Thus, the information service became Use-IT. This is how they presented themselves:
"USE-IT is a friendly, information-gathering center - a place to meet, relax, exchange ideas, find cheap place to sleep and hear all about the city has to offer to those, like you, on a low budget"
The second Use-IT was founded in Oslo, in 1989 and publishes it yearly ever since. In 1997, Rotterdam started Use-IT, and at first was part of the Youth Information Point's employment project for underprivileged youths. In 2002, Belgium established it's own Use-IT in Ghent, spreading than to Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Mechelen and Leuven. Since 2003 things started moving faster, with more and more cities joining the network, and in 2008 USE-IT Europe was founded. The initiative to start a new USE-IT always comes from local young people, and everyone looks for his own local subventions. However, the network offers a better perspective to help new members, to provide a better distribution and look for continuity. In Romania, USE-IT was founded for the first time in Timisoara, in 2013. Today there are 34 cities in the network, throughout Europe. You can find more about the network on the website www.use-it.travel
