Step into the Age of Discovery 🌍⚓

This year, I’m teaching an immersive Age of Discovery course through the Well-Educated Heart Academy (www.wehacademy.org). The course is designed to bring history to life in a meaningful and memorable way.

Classes will be held online on Wednesdays at 10am Mountain Time during the Fall semester.

We’ll follow the Well-Educated Heart rotation:
• September: Journey with Marco Polo into Asia
• October–November: Explore the daring voyages of Portuguese and Spanish explorers
• December: Discover the legacy of Christopher Columbus and Italy’s role in exploration

But we don’t stop at the classroom.

Students will have the opportunity to travel and experience history firsthand—walking aboard replicas of the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María, visiting the resting places of Vasco da Gama and Columbus, and exploring the vibrant cities shaped by these world-changing journeys.

This is more than a history class! It’s an invitation to see, feel, and experience the Age of Discovery.

If you are interested in taking my WWII Heroes & Literature, Part 1 course next fall (last taught during the 2024–25 school year), you’re also eligible to join an optional educational trip to Berlin & Prague! The course will be offered through Well-Educated Heart Academy and asynchronously through my own platform.

While the August 2026 trip is currently full with a waitlist, the October trip (October 12–18, 2026) still has four spots available.

Here are answers to a few common questions:

* Yes, parents are invited (and encouraged!) The cost is the same for parents and students. These trips help build a love of learning at any age! 😊

* The cost is $1,750 per person, which includes everything except airfare. You’ll just need to get to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) on October 12. Comparable trips typically cost much more—we work hard to keep these trips affordable and accessible while eating well and sleeping comfortably.

* Some families have received financial assistance through state educational programs. Parents in Utah, Arizona, and Florida have successfully done this. For example, on last summer’s France trip, families received about $500 in assistance, and one family is applying to have the same amount covered for a parent chaperone. Feel free to reach out with questions.

* Families are welcome to arrive early or stay longer to extend their European visit. Many have done this to make the most of international flights.

* Yes—students should have taken (or be taking in 2026–27) one of my WWII courses. These trips are designed to bring our studies to life by seeing what we learned about during the year.

It is becoming harder than ever to focus, think deeply, and stay grounded in a world full of constant distractions. Notifications, fast-paced media, and packed schedules pull our (and our students') attention in a hundred (or maybe even a thousand?) directions, leaving little room for clarity or meaningful effort.

In my full-time job as a patent attorney (when I am not teaching at the Well-Educated Heart Academy), I am paid based almost entirely on my production. The is no hourly wage for me. The more work I do (quantity + quality), the more I am paid. If my work is sloppy, I get paid less because someone else has to spend more time reviewing it. As a highly distractable person, it has taken a lot of time and effort to learn--and perhaps more importantly, to establish--habits and systems that help my mind find "the zone" on demand, think deeper, and create a mental space/peace where I can hear heaven's quiet messages.

I want to share what I have learned and what has worked for me. I also want to share what I have learned that hasn't worked for me, but might for you (or your student)! I am excited to offer a new course through WEHA this Spring called: Focus and Flow - Tools and Strategies for Clear Thinking in a Distracted World.

The course is being offered at half price: $150.

We will meet on Thursday mornings at 9am MST. Classes will be 30-60 minutes depending on that week's materials and in-class discussion.

For parents who are interested in the content but would rather not join the live class, or for anyone that is unable to take this course through WEHA due to timing or other conflicts, I am working to make this available to you as well. Please follow Carrack Tours for future updates, as I will not be posting those here.
