Monastery of Batalha

The Monastery of Batalha is one of Portugal’s most important national monuments and one of the finest examples of late medieval architecture in Europe. Construction began in 1386 when King João I ordered the monastery built to commemorate Portugal’s victory at the nearby Battle of Aljubarrota. The battlefield lies only a few kilometers from the town.

The monastery was both a royal vow and a dynastic monument, celebrating the founding of the new Aviz royal dynasty.

It was entrusted to the Dominican Order, whose monks lived and worshiped here for nearly 450 years, from the late fourteenth century until the dissolution of religious orders in Portugal in 1834.

Batalha is a municipality located in the Leiria District of central Portugal, renowned for the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Monastery of Batalha. It sits within the historical province of Beira Litoral and is bordered by Leiria, Ourém, Alcanena, and Porto de Mós. North of Lisbon and south from Porto.
