🚀 Sasti Sawari, Safe Sawari: A Step Towards Safer Public Transport at Microenterprise Youth Fair 2024

At the Microenterprise Youth Fair on November 19, 2024, Professor Saeed Ud Din Ahmed and his team presented their project Sasti Sawari, Safe Sawari. This innovative solution focuses on making transport safer and more affordable for low-income commuters in Karachi. The idea received great appreciation, including praise and support from Ahmed Bozai, Country Officer at Citibank Pakistan.

✨ The event also featured a panel discussion on growing microenterprises, moderated by Shaista Ayesha, CEO of SEED Ventures, with panelists Khizar Pervaiz, Rabeel Warraich, and Sima Kamil.

Our initiative received encouraging remarks from Ahmed Bozai, who expressed confidence in the project’s success and acknowledged the potential for this application system to be expanded to a city-scale public transportation network.

🌟On November 19, 2024, the Microenterprise Youth Fair was held at the Beach Luxury Hotel, Karachi, under the Pathways to Progress initiative by Citi Foundation and the British Asian Trust. The event celebrated young entrepreneurs with an open marketplace, networking opportunities, and impactful discussions aimed at fostering innovation and sustainable growth in microenterprises.

Professor Saeed from NED University shared his research on enhancing safety for lower-income commuters, particularly working women, who often face unsafe and costly transport.
🔹 Pilot Project with AKQRWA: Introduced the “Smart Box” system for Qingqis, featuring cameras, GPS tracking, and QR-code payment to improve safety and comfort.
🔹 The system allows real-time route monitoring via a mobile app and website, benefiting 31% of Karachi’s population.
🔹 Despite its success, the project lacks government support, but it was widely praised for its innovative approach to improving transport safety.

📅 On November 14, 2024, the Department of Architecture and Planning (DAP) at NED University of Engineering and Technology, in collaboration with the British Asian Trust, hosted the Karachi Public Transport Conference at NED City Campus. The conference aimed to explore innovative solutions for enhancing Karachi's public transport system, focusing on addressing the needs of working women and building an integrated city-wide transport network.

💡 Key Highlights from the Presentations:
1. Prof. Dr. Shabbar Ali highlighted the critical planning and infrastructure requirements for an integrated public transportation system, paving the way for cohesive city-wide connectivity.

2. Abdul Aziz (GM, SIDCL) discussed integrating Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines with existing transport services and presented viable solutions for smoother operations.

3. Dr. Saeed Ud Din Ahmed introduced two groundbreaking pilot projects: one focusing on improving working women's mobility and employability, and another in partnership with the All Karachi Qingqi Rickshaw Welfare Association (AKQRWA) to implement a "Smart Box" system for fare subsidies and route optimization.

On Tuesday, the DAP-NEDUET Research team arranged a training session for Qing-qi rickshaw drivers on "Road and Women Safety." The training is a key component of one of the Pilot projects, based on the idea of an "Integrated Transportation System Network" at the city level by using Qing-qi rickshaw as a feeder service in North Nazimabad Town, aiming to integrate public transport in Karachi. The British Asian Trust (BAT) and the All Karachi Qing-qi Rickshaw Welfare Association (AKQRWA) were the main collaborators in the project "Working Women Mobility and Employability Issues".
