🚢 Demurrage vs. Detention in Shipping – Know the Difference, Save Big! 💰

In global shipping, two terms are often confused — even by experienced professionals: Demurrage and Detention.

Both can lead to unexpected costs, delays, and unhappy customers if not managed properly.

They may sound similar, but they apply in very different situations. Let’s break it down 👇

⏱️ Demurrage | Delay at the Port ⚓

What it means:

Demurrage is charged when a loaded container remains at the port terminal or CFS beyond the allowed free time after arrival.

Common causes:

📄 Delays in customs clearance

❌ Incomplete or incorrect documentation

🚦 Port congestion

⏳ Late container pickup

Cost impact:

💸 Charged per container, per day — and the longer it stays, the higher the cost.

Detention is charged when a container is picked up from the port/CFS but not returned within the allowed free time.

💰 Charged per day for holding the container outside the port.
