Rural Rising Philippines We dream of creating 100,000 debt-free and sustainable local farmers by 2030. Updated info on Rural Rising

WHAT IS RURI? No produce goes to waste.

Rural Rising Philippines (RuRi) is a collective, non-profit grassroots effort to help distressed Filipino farmers get back on their feet and feed the nation with pride. It aims to do this by doing “Rescue Buys” in areas where there is an over-production of fruits and vegetables, and by paying the farmers above-farm gate prices. RuRi then distributes the rescued produce to its members at below-bagsakan prices. The farmers win and so do the consumers. All fruits and vegetables that are not claimed within 48 hours are automatically donated to hungry communities in the NCR and to various community pantries. We believe that when farmers are paid the right price, they have a chance at achieving rural prosperity; that by giving members access to fresh and cheap produce, they would share what they cannot consume to the needy or perhaps create a profitable reseller business; that by channeling all unclaimed or unsold produce to residents in economically depressed communities, their lives are sustained, their souls given hope. We do weekly Rescue Buys in towns and cities all over the country. RuRi operates a Vegetable Rescue Center in Baguio City, and two distribution hubs in the NCR. These are RuRi House in UP Village, Diliman, Quezon City and RuRi South in Alabang Town Center, Muntinlupa, and very soon in Bonifacio Global City (BGC). The conversations at RuRi are led by spouses Ace and Andie Estrada of Baguio City. RuRi currently has 34,000 members and 140,000 followers. You can send inquiries to [email protected]

RuRi is working to erect vegetable tramlines in Benguet, create a water and forest conservation project in Nueva Ecija, and establish community libraries in various farmer communities. It is also working to establish a processing and packaging facility for rescued produce, and the country’s first Rescue Kitchen. We welcome offers of help in whatever form it comes if it would help the farmers and create small but impactful change in the countryside. ONLINE INFO ON RURI:

GREEN BUILDING INDEED.This marks a successful talk at the Building Green 2026 Summit of the Philippine Green Building Council (PhilGBC) at Ascott Hotel, BGC. This is also the second and last day of a RURIPOP (Rural Rising Pop-Up Store) at the Seven/NEO next door. We’ve transformed its majestic Arcade into a space filled with greens and other vegetables grown by RuRi farmers. Pangasina, Ilocos, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija and Benguet represent!

The final slide of my talk looks like this:
“Regenerative built should not end at the property line. A truly resilient building strengthens the community living/working in it…and communities hundreds of kilometers away that sustain the people inside it”

Yesterday and today, and if talks of regular RuRiPops here do materialize, Seven/NEO is truly a green building.

Mabuhay and thank you, PhilGBC.

So , get your greens, fruits and veggies today. Last day today @ BGC.

Venue:
Arcade, Seven/NEO
5th Ave, Taguig, 1634 Metro Manila

Time:

SUPPORT THE FARMERS OF SATSUMA. We’re letting you know that we have 3,000 kilos (3 tons) of SATSUMA ORANGES coming in from Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya. These are the very farms, even the very farmers, that are literally fighting
mining interests that threaten to affect their land.

Back read a story:
COURAGE, KASIBU. Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya is big in the news lately with farmers fighting desperately against the entry of large scale mining. We know Kasibu. We have been there many times, in Malabing Valley, where the CITRUS plantations are. We have done several Rescue Buys there not only for citrus but also for pumpkins and other vegetables. In fact, Kasibu was one of the towns where we did our first rescues, during the pandemic, when Rural Rising was only a couple of months old. You can say that RuRi cut its Rescue Buy teeth on Kasibu. This is a message of thanks from the mayor during those times, and these are the stories that came out from our efforts to help in that town. Some of the farmers we know/met there are now in the fight of their lives, this is why we find the ongoing developments personally disturbing. This Sunday, let us all pray for Kasibu.

Arriving tomorrow. Will be displayed in RuRiPop BGC, RuRiPop Pasay and RuRiPop QC.

RED AND GORGEOUS REDSEN. What a lucky discovery this is, we are so pleased to offer this to you. RED POTATOES, grown locally by a single Benguet farmer, seeds “imported” from Canada. This is rare. It’s like Canada was transplanted in the highlands of the Philippines, that’s actually what happened. This young farmer had the luck to travel to Canada, all expenses paid by a benefactor. For most people, the trip is the opportunity of a lifetime. For this young enterprising farmer, the return trip home is the real opportunity. In his bags he snuck home a can of Redsen potato seeds. The moment he stepped on home soil, he set about growing his first crop. “Nananam sobra!” (they are so tasty), he says with pride and triumph when they successfully grew.

These RED POTATOES would make great French Fries and great nilaga and great anything you can make them into. Roasted, especially good. Red Potatoes are starchier than white potatoes, meaning they have a unique texture, more fun to eat. Serve them skin on, on salad. This is how ewe prefer to eat this.
