“My sister and I are now in our 50s, but that didn’t stop us from trying this activity—and we’re so glad we did. Completing the 9.4-kilometer kayak and paddle was a real achievement and a bucket-list moment we were proud to check off. Our guide gave us such a warm welcome and was incredibly accommodating throughout the experience. As a lovely bonus, we even enjoyed crabs for lunch, which weren’t part of the tour. Given the chance, we would absolutely do this again. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a rewarding and memorable adventure—at any age.”

Thank you Doris for leaving us a review and paddling with us! When in El Nido, come join us for a kayak ecotour in the largest mangrove forest located in Dewil Valley, New Ibajay. Go on an eco exploration while supporting the locals who protect the mangroves!

For strong paddlers looking to go beyond our usual turnaround point, we can take you all the way to the end of the river, where it meets the open sea. From there, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of the stunning Imorigue Island.

This extension adds about an hour to the trip (round-trip), perfect for those eager to stretch the adventure even further!

“Kayaking the Dewil Mangrove River was an incredible experience. Our guide was Kuya Ondo who also runs the organization working hard to protect and rehabilitate this amazing place. We took a trike from Eco Sanctuaries in Nacpan, about a 55-minute ride. We arrived around 8am, close to high tide, which meant we got to paddle through the stunning mangrove “tunnel.” It was amazing to see the mangroves and the wildlife up close. After that, we headed out into the quiet, untouched bay on Palawan’s east side, opposite from El Nido and so there are basically zero tourists anywhere nearby. Kuya’s passion and deep knowledge about the mangrove ecosystem really stood out. This tour isn’t just peaceful and fun, it’s also helping protect this beautiful area and support the local community. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature and wants to make a positive impact.“

Thank you Sam Cooper for paddling with us and leaving us this review!

For those taking the shorter kayak route we’ve designed with the community, we stop at the mangrove boardwalk to take a quick walk around nature and rest from the initial paddling we’ve done. Those who want to swim can also do so in the river. It’s clean, it’s safe, and refreshing!

Thanks for these photos and for paddling with us

Thank you to the students of University of Southern California and Dr. Shannon for paying us a visit and going on a kayak ecotour to learn about mangroves and experience them upclose! We are grateful to host learning ecotours for students and to support our local community at the same time. After the kayak ecotour, they visited Eco Sanctuaries to learn about sustainability in tourism.

We can create learning packages for other student groups! To learn more please check out bit.ly/dewilkayakreg

Rivers are essential to life — flowing through landscapes, cultures, and communities. Rivers nourish forests, wetlands, and farmland, making them vital for food security and biodiversity. Many communities have built their history, traditions, and economies around rivers, relying on them not only for survival but also for inspiration and identity. Protecting our rivers means protecting the lifeblood of both nature and humanity.

A wide range of bird species also rely on mangroves for nesting, feeding, and shelter!

Birds feed on fish, crabs, insects, and mollusks found in mangrove mudflats and waters, while the dense canopy and twisted roots of mangroves offer secure nesting sites and protection from predators.

Pictured here is the Stork-billed Kingfisher, which you can spot from afar or up close through its distinct and colorful beak and body! Several kingfishers can be found in the mangrove ecosystem, and while you’re kayaking, be on the lookout… you might just see the little Storkie!
