Tesla has come close to bankruptcy not once, but twice. The first time was during the 2008 economic crash when the company was struggling to close a $100 million Series E funding round. With the global economy in shambles, Tesla found it nearly impossible to raise capital, and by the end of 2008, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy ¹.

Elon Musk took a huge risk by investing his personal money in the company, which ultimately helped Tesla stay afloat. The company's CFO, Deepak Ahuja, also played a crucial role in navigating Tesla through this difficult period by treating the company's June 2010 IPO as a funding strategy rather than an exit strategy ¹.

The second time Tesla came close to bankruptcy was during the production ramp-up of the Model 3 sedan from 2017 to 2019. According to Elon Musk, the company was about a month away from bankruptcy during this period, which he described as "production and logistics hell" ².

Again, Deepak Ahuja's strategic guidance helped Tesla navigate this challenging period by reducing CapEx across the company and cutting expenses that didn't have a strong value justification ¹.
