HELICOPTER TRAINEE PILOTS EMBARK ON THEIR JOURNEY
Helicopter trainee pilots and Lae City residents, Angela Wycliffe and Shiloh Tugula, departed on Sunday, 19 July, for Australia to begin the next chapter of their aviation journey.
This pioneering training initiative, a partnership between Lae City Authority and Manolos Aviation, comes at a crucial time, helping address the shortage of national helicopter pilots. The program represents a shared commitment to developing the next generation of Papua New Guinean aviation professionals and is the first initiative of its kind dedicated to creating opportunities for young Papua New Guineans to pursue careers in helicopter aviation.
This milestone is significant not only for Papua New Guinea’s aviation industry but also for the wider Pacific region, demonstrating what can be achieved through investing in local talent.
For Angela, this journey is especially meaningful. It was her very first time flying on an aircraft, and fittingly, it marks the beginning of her journey to flying one herself.
Both women bring strong academic backgrounds to the program. Shiloh holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics majoring in Electronic Instrumemtation, while Angela holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
Their training in Australia will begin with their Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter) [PPL(H)] theory before progressing to their Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter) [CPL(H)] theory and practical flight training.
