Athletics PNG has named a preliminary team of 20 athletes for the 2026 Commonwealth Games with the travelling team expected to be trimmed down slightly in line with the final number of quota places allocated to athletics by the PNG Olympic Committee.
In line with policies adopted for major Games in recent years selection is based primarily on results achieved the previous year; ongoing monitoring of athlete training and commitment; and the results of local trials and overseas competitions already held in 2026. With 4x100m relays on the programme as well as a mixed 4x400m ,relay considerations were a major factor in the selection of the womens team of six athletes.
The team however does include three outstanding individuals in Isila Apkup Scholastica Herman and Adrine Monagi.
The mens squad of 14 athletes is more balanced and includes rising middle distance talent Jiuteis Robinson, three 400m hurdlers, Robert Oa for the 110m hurdles and three javelin throwers. With a number of quality athletes in the mens sprinting ranks.
Athletics PNG has high hopes for its mens 4x100m relay squad that broke the national record in the Palau Games last year. Commenting on the absence of its distance runners from the team , APNG President Tony Green said that the Commonwealth Games was not an appropriate competition for them, and that other overseas competitions are planned to assist them prepare for the Pacific Games next year.
The team for the Commonwealth Games is expected to be finalized by the end of May. Copies of the Athletics PNG selection criteria are available on request through email to [email protected].
