On this day two weeks ago we were shocked to lose our much loved brother, Tony Gare. On Friday this incredibly kind and gentle man was laid to rest β our hearts broken knowing we have lost a true legend and friend to so many. His send off was testimony to the man that he was β so many loving tributes from his amazing family, his friends and workmates and then the streets lined with everyone honouring such a great man.
Tonyβs first job with Dynes was back in 1999, 25 years ago, while he was running the stores for Southfreight, when he would come in early in the morning and unload the first wave of powder trucks to ensure the trucks could deliver three loads in the day. He also did the odd night-shift carting woodchip from the Chip mill in Mosgiel to the Port when required.
In 2000 Tony move into the role of Transport Manager for Southfreight, managing a fleet of trucks for Harbour Transport Ltd which was owned by Keith McCann and Dynes. In 2002 the decision was made for Harbour to join forces with Freightbase (a division of Wilsons) a container fleet based in Dunedin and then renamed Harbour Transport 2002 Ltd.
In March of 2003 Tony resigned from Southfreight and was looking to head to Mainfreight. Looking was all he did as Peter was on the phone to convince Tony that he should be moving to Harbour Transport to become joint manager with Calum.
In 2005 the company was at a cross roads after losing its biggest customer and there were some hard calls to be made. The decision was made to push forward, so a renamed Icon Logistics was formed with three new trucks to start what is today one of the biggest container and storage companies in Otago.
The company is incredibly proud of Tonyβs achievements in Icon as Manager since 2005. He built a team that has helped Icon to become what it is today.
Tony you will be sadly missed on all that you have done but more importantly missed as we build the Logistics Park and not having you by our side.
Our hearts and thoughts are with Denise, Aleisha, Danielle and our Sammy as they navigate this heartbreaking time, along with Tonyβs extended family and many friends.
Tony, you were exactly as the company was named β a true ICON
Rest in Peace Tony ππ§‘
