Garmin ECHOMAP UHD2 vs GPSMAP Series 🎣

One of the most common questions we get asked is:
“Which Garmin is right for my boat?”

Both are excellent systems — but they suit different boats, fishing styles, and upgrade plans.

✅ ECHOMAP UHD2
Great value for most trailer boats and weekend fishos.

✅ GPSMAP
Built for serious offshore setups, advanced networking, radar, autopilot, and 1kW transducers.

We’ve put together a practical comparison guide.

One of our favourite installs to date 👌

This White Pointer 850 received a serious electronics upgrade with the addition of the new Garmin Panoptix PS70 through-hull transducer, paired with a Garmin GPSMAP 1553 widescreen display alongside the existing 8416xsv setup.

The PS70 is an impressive piece of tech for game fishing and offshore work, offering:
• Triple-beam coverage
• Rapid sonar returns
• Exceptional target separation and clarity

A huge thanks to Steve at Fusion Fabrication for the custom alloy work and tidy internal cable covers inside the hull — the finished result came out awesome.

This rig is now seriously well equipped for deep water and game fishing missions 🎣🔥

Bluefin season is getting closer, so today was all about making sure this Haines Hunter SS725 is ready to perform offshore.

We carried out full transducer testing using the Airmar TDT1000 on the existing Airmar SS175HW and Airmar SS175L 1kW transducers, running through a Simrad S5100 module to a Simrad NSS EVO3S 16.

Both transducers tested well within factory spec, giving confidence that the system is performing exactly as it should.

Testing like this helps confirm transducer health, installation quality, and overall sonar performance before heading wide—because when the tuna are on, you want your sounder working at its best.

Proper setup and testing makes all the difference.

Garmin Reactor 40 Autopilot install completed on this Nuline 650 👌

This boat was already running a solid Garmin setup, so the goal was to integrate the autopilot cleanly and make everything work seamlessly together.

⚙️ Existing Setup

• Garmin 8410XSV
• TM275LHW transducer
• GMI20 engine data display

🔧 What we did

• Installed Garmin Reactor 40 autopilot system
• Pump and ECU mounted neatly in the rear of the boat
• Dash modified to fit the new GHC50 controller in place of the GMI20
• Custom black aluminium console built by Fusion Fabrication to remount the GMI20 on top of the dash
• CCU installed under cabin squab for optimal performance
• Installed and bled Maxtek hydraulic steering system using the Bubble Buster

🧭 Setup & Calibration

Once installed:
• Dockside wizard completed with vessel specs
• Sea trial carried out in Tauranga Harbour

Perfect conditions for calibration — slack tide and no wind 👌

💥 Result

A clean install with full integration across the Garmin network — giving the skipper precise control and a much more enjoyable experience on the water.

👉 We specialise in marine electronics installation in Tauranga and across the Bay of Plenty, including autopilots, transducers, and full helm upgrades.

Not all 1kW transducer installs are straightforward…

We had a 1kW transducer install yesterday that should have been simple — but the transom angle told a different story.

Even with the three factory wedges, the transducer angle was still way off.
To get it right, we would’ve either:

➡️ Needed a ridiculous stack of wedges
➡️ Or spent serious time sanding and modifying wedges to suit

Our solution:
✔️ Added a QME 10° wedge
✔️ Combined it with two standard wedges
✔️ Dialled in the correct angle

Every hull is different — and sometimes you’ve got to think outside the box to get it performing properly.
