Its double Dynes Transport (Tapanui) Ltds for Monday on the Move!

True Blue truck was a 1979 Kenworth W924, chassis number 900434, registered JD8409. It was the first W924 Dynes bought and the second brand-new Kenworth overall, the first was K124.

Driven by Alf Barrnett, True Blue certainly earned its keep. By day, Alf carted timber to Bluff, before Jim (James) Dynes took over at night to haul woodchips to Port Chalmers. The truck was rarely given a chance to cool down! Later, Alf was doing timber runs to Christchurch with a 40-footer on it. Dynes eventually traded the truck back to Domtrac in 1985.

True Blue was also the first truck to win the Gore Truck Show, back in the early 1980s.

Pictured with True Blue is country singer Noel Parlane, who was well known on the music scene at the time.

Now that’s a trucking good bit of history!

Thanks to Marc Sivertsen for posting this photo and sparking a conversation :)

The legacy of H.W. Richardson Group began when Bill Richardson was working as a carpenter in the family joinery factory. He told his father, “Dad, I’m sorry, but I don’t want to continue. All I want to do is run trucks.” As they say, the rest is history.

Starting with just four trucks from South Invercargill Transport, Bill took the reins at the age of 20 following his father's passing. With passion and vision, he transformed the Richardson yard, painting everything in the iconic green and yellow colours that are still proudly represented today.

Bill's firm handshakes, fair dealings and unique approach to business became the foundation of HWR, helping shape the way the company operates and reflecting the values it still holds today.

Have a listen Joc O'Donnell and Shona Richardson as they share the journey of our first transport company, offering a glimpse into the humble beginnings that started it all.

Our Director Scott O'Donnell is also a Director of Walkinshaw TWG Racing, and he gets behind the wheel himself. So, it is safe to say we have an interest in racing too.

Congratulations to our Driver of the Month for September, David (Rowdy) Scobie from Transport Services Limited (TSL).

David started employment with TSL in 2000, originally on a spreader, before moving into stock cartage, which is recognised as one of the most demanding areas of the transport industry. More than 25 years later, David continues to be a dependable and highly respected stock driver for TSL.

As one of TSL's senior drivers, David is a valued and experienced member of the team. He operates an FH 700-horsepower truck and, throughout his time with the company, has covered extensive routes across both the South Island and the North Island.

David completes allocated work reliably, efficiently, and with minimal supervision. He maintains strong working relationships with TSL clients and willingly supports other drivers with directions, farm access information, and practical advice. He keeps his unit clean and well presented, which reflects a high standard of professionalism given the nature of stock work.

David's professionalism has also been recognised outside the business. Two years ago, New Zealand Truck & Driver completed an article on his new unit. After finishing the article, the photographer called into the TSL yard to comment on what an excellent person David had been to work with.

David has also recently received his 25 Years of Service Award.

David's experience, reliability, professionalism, and willingness to support others make him a deserving recipient of Driver of the Month recognition.

Many thanks to Truckstops for supplying this month's prize pack.

🎉 Jolene Ferguson, mytransport Manager, has reached 20 years of service though she was here well before she was on the payroll, growing up a stone’s throw from our previous head office. She started in Concrete admin in 2006. Jolene then spent some time in our transport department, the executive floor, and now mytransport, where she's developed and deployed the platform and leads a team of her own. Anyone who's worked near her knows you can hear her coming down the hallway with a cheerful g'day, and is known for her integrity, loyalty, humour, and larger-than-life personality.

🎉 Andrea Dempsey, Group Administration Assistant, has reached a whooping 25 years of service! Andrea started as our Receptionist being the smiling face for HWR. Andrea then moved to our concrete department where she stayed for 23 years! Andrea has now done a full circle and is once again the smiling face for HWR.

Thank you both for your years of commitment and the positive impact you've made across the business. Congratulations!

This week's Monday on the Move features our very first Mack truck.

As Bill Richardson recalled in Wheels & Deals:
"The Mack franchise had started in New Zealand in 1972 through Motor Truck Distributors."
"Mack was the only heavy American truck manufacturer to make all its own components, including the motor, transmission and rear axles."
"It cost $45,000 and was No. 44 in our fleet, an R685RS. It proved to be an excellent truck, so the following year we bought a second one."

Today, Mack trucks operate right across the country as part of our fleet. As they say, the rest is history.

Ox (Wayne McEwan) was recognised at the 2026 NZ Road Transport Hall of Fame Conference & Gala Dinner last Friday evening. The New Zealand Road Transport Hall of Fame Conference and Gala Dinner celebrates and honours the outstanding contributions individuals have made to the New Zealand road transport industry.

For more than 47 years, Ox dedicated his life to an industry he loved, becoming one of the sector's most respected and influential figures.

Ox built his reputation behind the wheel, earning respect through his work ethic, practical knowledge and determination. During the 1980s and 1990s, he became a key figure in the development of New Zealand's live-capture deer industry. At a time when deer farming was still emerging, Ox spent countless hours transporting live deer throughout the country, helping establish an industry that has become a significant contributor to New Zealand's economy. His commitment saw him travel some of the most remote roads in the country, often working around the clock to get the job done.

At the centre of this pioneering work was the legendary ERF truck, Deerhunter, a vehicle that became synonymous with Ox and the live-capture deer era. The contribution of Deerhunter to New Zealand transport history was recognised when it was inducted into Bill Richardson Transport World in 2007.

Ox successfully guided Ryal Bush Transport into partnership with H.W. Richardson Group, helping shape the future of the business, later serving as General Manager of Rural Transport. As a leader and mentor, Ox shared his knowledge generously and helped guide countless people throughout their careers. His influence extended far beyond transport.

His legacy lives on in his family, the people he mentored, the businesses he helped build and the industry he helped shape. A transport pioneer, a respected leader and a genuine Southland character.

Thank you for everything you gave to our industry and our communities, you are missed.

This week's Monday on the move is a feature on Graeme Slack at HRT Andrews Transport.

Graeme began his career in the transport industry at the age of 22, working for Waitaki Transport in Oamaru. Early on, he found himself behind the wheel of a 1963 TK Bedford, marking the beginning of a long and dedicated career. Graeme spent three years with Waitaki Transport before moving to Balfour.

He later joined Carson Transport, where he worked for an impressive 24 years before the business was acquired by Andrews Transport (now HRT Andrews Transport) in 2001. His first truck at Carson Transport was an Isuzu four-wheeler, a combination that set the foundation for many years on the road.

In 2017, Graeme was recognised for 40 years of service across Carson and HRT Andrews Transport. Now, nearly a decade on, that milestone has grown to 49 years in the industry.

Known as “Slackie”, Graeme has recently stepped into a new unit, a Nissan UD Croner PK18-280 with an Allison auto transmission and a 6.7metre, 22-foot TES deck and Delta 3-pen 2-deck crate. The setup also included a 26-foot 2-axle Jackson trailer with a sliding pole and a 3-pen 2-deck Total crate to go behind it. Slackie had been considering semi-retirement for some time, so HRT Andrews Transport provided a smaller unit to keep him going for the next few years.
