Ever wondered what it looks like from the top of the Auckland Airport air traffic control tower?

Meet Ashleigh, one of our Auckland tower controllers. This is her view each day as she helps guide aircraft safely in and out of the airport.

This ANZAC Day, we acknowledge our long association with the New Zealand Defence Force and pause to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have served, and those who continue to serve, our country.
We also remember the members of our own Airways whānau who have worn the uniform. Today we honour their commitment, and that of all who have served, with gratitude and respect.
Lest we forget.

We’re marking Pride Month by strengthening our partnership with Pride Pledge and reaffirming our commitment to inclusion and belonging. As we head into Pride Month in Ōtautahi (Christchurch), home to our largest campus, it’s a meaningful time to reflect on the role we all play in creating a workplace where everyone feels safe, respected and able to thrive.
In 2023, we achieved our first Rainbow Tick accreditation, an important milestone in building a workplace where people feel valued and supported. Partnering with Pride Pledge builds on that foundation, connecting us with initiatives across Aotearoa and supporting the ongoing work of our Rainbow Employee Network and allies across Airways.
Last month, we recognised Pride Month in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) with our Rainbow Employee Network hosting a Putt with Pride event.
Inclusion is an ongoing effort and we’re proud to keep listening, learning and leading.

This Sunday we mark International Women’s Day. For Airways, it’s a chance to celebrate the women helping to shape the future of aviation.
While aviation has traditionally had fewer women in operational and technical roles, that is changing. Across the industry, there is a growing focus on encouraging more women to explore aviation careers and ensuring the sector reflects the communities we serve.
At Airways, this work is part of our commitment to strengthening the aviation workforce and supporting more women into technical roles, aligning with the goals of the New Zealand Aviation Action Plan.
Ahead of Sunday, we’re sharing the story of one of our many talented technical specialists. Hear Andria talk about her pathway into aviation and what she enjoys about working in such a critical role.

An outstanding effort delivered some impressive results in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge. Airways riders clocked up 11,911km through February and smashed our 10,000km goal.
Even better, 4,599km replaced vehicle trips, helping save 833kg of CO₂e in just one month.
Our people's efforts are a great demonstration of the impact active transport can have for wellbeing and sustainability.

Clear communication is critical to aviation safety.
That's why we were pleased to support this year's Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School with new pilot headsets to be used during the two-week training camp, making it an even better learning environment.
The camp has now wrapped up, but these headsets will keep supporting future pilots as they take to the skies for many years to come.

Fun fact: for two weeks every January, a small rural Waikato airfield becomes the busiest in the country.
Our Airways controllers have been onsite at the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School this week, supporting the next generation of aviators as they take to the skies.
Now in its 59th year, the flying school brings together 16 to 19-year-olds with little or no flying experience. Their goal is to complete their first solo flight during the camp, while learning about the wider aspects of aviation including meteorology and air traffic control.
During the programme, Matamata Aerodrome transforms into New Zealand’s busiest airfield, with up to 650 aircraft movements a day. A dedicated team of Airways controllers keeps everything running safely from our mobile control tower, which is a converted shipping container fitted out with our key technology and specialist systems.
Because Walsh is a Scout camp at its heart, the controllers’ work goes well beyond the usual day job. Part of the fun is contributing to the day-to-day tasks that keep the camp operating smoothly. That means taking our turn mowing the airstrip!
