Thank you to passionate people doing their bit fighting against the wilding pine spread in South Marlborough.

Cam and his family are avid trampers - Heading out the Wye Route to Hidden Hut Marlborough:

630 trees killed
Around 50% of these were big enough to require cutting and pasting.
Roughly 80% contorta, 20% douglas fir
We focused on the higher elevation areas on the western side (see work area map). We planned to finish with the nearer areas in the lower valley but got low on food before we could do all of that. Not a huge number of trees seen there, but some of course.
Within our work area, there are some larger trees getting established in the bluffs indicated in the 'inaccessible trees' map attached. This seems like a worthy target for a heli operation.
Plenty of larger trees on both the eastern and western flanks of the valley downstream of the hut.
Many maturing trees accessible in the head of Nesbits

Our Operations manager Andrew is not only skilled spraying out of a helicopter but also while trying to film with his phone. We will be posting a series of short videos from his perspective!

1. Mature coning Monti-Cola pine tree. Used as spread indicator as only planted in one site in Marlborough. This specimen approx. 40km from the original plant site, WIND plays a pivotal role in wilding pine seed spread.

Great video of Andrew - SMLRT OPs Manager. Wanding/spot spaying Douglas fir at 5000 feet on Mt Horrible (Awatere Valley) Tuesday 24th feb. He’s also finding 100ft Douglas fir in the beech forest and a few contorta.
