Empower Children of Manaslu- ECOM Every child has the right to education. Namasté! This page has been created by two people: Monica Urian and Mané Gurung. Monica lives and works in Brussels.

This page aims to support Nepalese children from the Manaslu area living in difficult conditions to remain in school though sponsorships, distribution of school supplies, etc. Mané is a mountain guide born in Singla, in the Manaslu area, currently living in Kathmandu. Since 2011, they went to Singla together once a year every year, and this is how this project was born. The aim of this page is to

support children who are either orphans, abandoned by one or both parents, belong to the lowest casts (Dalit, Kami) or live in conditions of extreme poverty to get an education. Nepal has one of the lowest educational levels in the world, according to the UNDP- Human Development Index; the literacy level is 64,6% and the quality of public school education is problematic. This project currently supports children from the villages of Khorla, Singla and Mandré in the following way:
- sponsorships of individual children: 25 EUR/ month, all the money benefits the child by providing school uniforms and supplies, vitamines and medicine, food, clothes, shoes, hygiene products
- support for the whole school with school supplies, uniforms, toys, books, etc.
- distribution of clothes, shoes and toys to other children than the sponsored ones. We have some other ideas- whose realisation will depend on funding. If you are interested to join this project, please contact us through the messaging system to discuss about how you can help.

Once again a big thank you to all people who generously donated and/or transported all this, especially to Jeanne Alart and Anita la Poloquita and her friends. It has been an unusually abundant year.
We have to keep the same standards from now on 😅.
Please contact us if you know any people or even groups who can bring things to Nepal for our kids!

Every child in our programme has a story. A difficult one.
Every child in our programme has dreams.
We hope to empower them to fulfill it. It's their right. It's our duty. Education is the only way forward ❤️

On the way to Khorla, we always pass by Pila's house. She has been in our programme since she was a cute little girl ❤️, supported by wonderful Katalin Kovács.

Pila's mother always prepares something to eat for me and offers me a drink. This time she insisted to carry my backpack on the very steep way down to Khorla, where to my huge surprise the whole school was waiting for me with kilos of elder flowers and roses!

The director Gurung Sita is away for health reasons, so I was not expecting any special welcome committee, especially that we had a huge party in January 2025 during my last visit here when we launched the hostel 'Kind Home'.

But I was underestimating the warmth and gratitude of the Khorla community, as well as their pleasure to throw a good party! 10 students danced for us and then we all joined in a big celebration.
Thank you so much 🙏 ❤️🌹🥰🤩💃🕺.

Yesterday we left Singla to come to Khorla, the second village of our project. Some of the mothers of the children who are supported in our programme came to say goodbye and bring gifts - fresh eggs, a box of lentils with eggs in it (the most creative way to transport eggs!), even a basket and of course the traditional katas (buddhist silk scarves wishing a good journey) and rose garlands.

We also received the blessing of an old woman (more than 80 y old) who is blind and lives on her own. We have given her rice, salt, oil etc for a few years now. She is happy to get this help, making her life a little bit easier.

Every year we visit the school in Singla to make sure the children in our programme are studying well, this is one of the main conditions to be part of the programme. It's also a source of joy to see them progress despite so harsh life circumstances.
Their determination has always amazed me ❤️👩🏽‍🏫👨🏽‍🎓 👩🏾‍🎓 📚 📕 📖

More news- from Khorla this time :the 25 children who graduated the 10th grade in Khorla and the 2 in Manbu received financial support to take the School End Exam from us.
This is like a Nepali baccalaureat. Without it, they would not be able to pursue their studies.
They must go to another region of Nepal for 2 months. We make sure they can pay their transport, accommodation, food and maybe even some private classes. This has become a tradition in Khorla, this is the fourth generation of kids we supported for the SEE, including during covid times.
Go kids, go! 🤞🤞🤞🍀🍀🍀🧑‍🍳🧑‍🏭🧑‍💼🧑‍🔬🧑‍🎤🧑‍🚀🧑‍🚒👮👩🏻‍🚒👮‍♀️

Busy times last week for Monica in Brussels : 2 sales of Nepali products in the European Commission on the occasion of the international day of women's rights AND sending a 22 kg bag full of shoes and clothes to Kathmandu.
Thank you to all colleagues who bought the scarves, soaps, woolen objects etc and to Marta who kindly agreed to take the luggage 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Solidarity is one of the things that makes us human.

PS: feline Daju did not travel 😅

We distributed the following items to 100 children and their families:
-2,32 tons of rice
- 320 kg of lentils
- 220 kg of sugar
- 200 kg of salt
- 912 notebooks
- 1020 pencils
- 1020 pens
- 147 toothpastes
- 147 toothbrushes
- 800 pieces of soap (for face and for washing clothes).
All these products were bought locally; we also distributed the 70 kg of clothes, shoes, toys and chocolate brought from Belgium.
The smiles speak for themselves. Thank you for helping us to support these wonderful kids who deserve a chance to a better life- which starts with a better education and food 🙏👧🧒👦👩🧑 📚📖
