Yayoi Tengu Street in Beppu

Origin of Yayoi Tengu
The Tengu is also mentioned in the Nihon Shoki as the main image of a guardian deity that wards off evil spirits and protects people at will due to their divine powers. In 1688 A.D., there was a great disaster in the Kitahama region of Beppu Village, and it is written in Bungo Travelogue that the residents of Beppu Village suffered great damage. At that time, Beppu Village had the Ryochiku Road running north and south, and it is said that there was a lot of traffic going back and forth to Nagasaki and other places, and that the main shrine and otabisho were located at Saihoji Temple. It is recorded in the Bungo Fudoki that in 1715 A.D. (Meiji 2), Akihabagiya Goryozen was built at the current location of Akihabara Shrine from Shiramine, Sanuki Province, by order of the Mori feudal lord who ruled Beppu Village at the time of Tenryo. is left behind
Furthermore, it is said that a stone monument was erected at ``the entrance of today’s Nagarekawa-dori Street of Yayoi Shopping Street,’’ which at the time was a back street leading to Kaimon-ji Temple, in order to pray for the health of the entire area. The Yayoi shopping district has been participating in festivals in various ways to express gratitude for the hot springs and the prosperity of Beppu.
In February 1971, we created the “Yayoi Tengu Mikoshi” to ward off bad luck from fires in the shopping district, and for 19 years since then, it has continued to protect our shopping district from major fires.
At the Beppu Onsen Festival held in April every year, it makes a grand and dignified appearance as the ``Yayoi Tengu Mikoshi’’ and has become a specialty of the hot spring festival.
