All flag states ask for this document when registering a vessel that has been registered elsewhere. While some authorities happily accept a digital copy, others require the certificate to be presented with an Apostille.

Thinking that registering your yacht in the Netherlands will get you off the hook for VAT? Not quite! 😄

Some ship registers, like the Dutch one, do not ask for proof that VAT has been paid, they treat registration and fiscal obligations as two separate matters entirely. Sensible, right? Well, yes…but it does not mean the taxman sees it that way.

Sailing under an EU flag will not stop authorities from checking whether VAT has been paid on your vessel. So, purchasing a VAT-unpaid yacht and registering in a flag state that does not ask for proof of VAT payment, will not make those obligations disappear.

🚨 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗠𝗦𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀? 🚨

You might be surprised to know that many Polish registered vessels register their CallSign and MMSI outside of Poland, often to avoid the 4 to 8 week waiting period in Poland.

However, this puts the vessel in breach of Polish flag state regulations, and the regulations of the country where the CallSign and MMSI were issued.

The rule is straightforward: 👉️ the flag state and the country that issues the *CallSign* and *MMSI* must be one and the same.

You can even verify this yourself, the first three digits of an MMSI are the Maritime Identification Digits, and they should always reflect the vessel's country of registration.
