“An Unidentified Piece of a Puzzle”
Have you ever forced yourself to fit into situations where you were never meant to belong?
Lately, I’ve realized that trying something new—stepping outside of what you usually do—can teach you incredibly valuable lessons. I recently had an experience like that. It wasn’t pleasant, and it’s not easy to talk about, but I’m grateful for the chance to learn from it. Not all bad experiences lead to bad outcomes; some become lessons you’ll carry with you for the rest of your life.
I was once an unidentified piece of a puzzle—trying to blend in, trying to fit into places and situations where I simply didn’t belong.
I imagine a puzzle made of square pieces. I carefully collect all the pieces and begin to put the puzzle together. When I’m almost finished, I realize that one piece is missing. I start searching through the cabinets to find it. As I’m looking, something shiny catches my eye—something new, something almost identical to the missing piece. Without thinking, I grab it and try to place it into the empty space.
But it doesn’t fit.
Still, I’m so focused on completing the puzzle that I force it in anyway. I push and push until it stays—but by then, the piece is damaged, worn out, and mistreated.
That unidentified piece of the puzzle is me. No matter how hard we try to force ourselves into situations or into people’s lives when we don’t belong, it will never work. We only end up tired, discouraged, and stripped of the confidence that once made us willing to try new things. We shouldn’t push ourselves to the point where no one is waiting for us, where no one wants us to stay. We deserve to be gentle with ourselves, to love ourselves, and to go where our hearts—and the people around us—truly welcome us.
I can say that I am not healed from what happened, but I am grateful for what I learned. I will continue to carry that lesson with me as I grow into a better version of myself.
