Fuel Oil Contamination

The recent risk analysis by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) has uncovered an alarming issue: the presence of harmful substances in fuel oil used by seagoing vessels. The study reveals that these contaminants are often by-products from the chemical industry, leading to significant risks for both marine operations and the environment.

Notably, 15% of tested samples contain substances not originating from the refining process, indicating the intentional admixture of hazardous materials. These findings underscore the urgent need for stricter fuel oil quality standards.
