Re-registering 10 working vessels under one flag is no small task, and that is exactly what we did for EU agency.

The project involved deregistering each vessel from its existing flag state, preparing the documentation, coordinating physical surveys across multiple locations in Europe, and working closely with the Portuguese maritime authorities to get every Certificate of Registry issued.

Managing 10 vessels, spread across different sites, each with a different local operator, it required careful preparation and clear communication at every step.

Last week, I stepped aboard a client's newly purchased Bermuda Ketch - once owned and operated by a European navy - and stumbled upon something rather curious in the wheelhouse: a single Euro coin 🪙, fixed firmly to the floor.

Now, I am familiar with the old tradition of placing a coin at the foot of the mast. Roman sailors did it to pay their passage to the afterlife should the voyage go badly, and the custom has sailed down through the centuries ever since. But a coin in the wheelhouse? That was new to me.

Here is the puzzle. The vessel dates from the 1960s, yet the coin is a Euro, a currency that did not exist until decades later. So it was clearly placed long after she was built. Which raises the question: if a coin like this is a good luck charm, can it be replaced without upsetting the magic?

Who checks up on your yacht? 🔍

Here is a question we hear surprisingly often: "Will my flag state come and inspect my boat?"

If you use your yacht purely for pleasure, the answer is, in most cases, a reassuring "probably not". Some flag states carry out an inspection before registration or every so often afterwards, but the majority of European flag states do not inspect recreational vessels at all. Your yacht can simply enjoy its retirement from scrutiny before it has even begun. 😄

Commercial registration is a different kettle of fish. Charter your yacht out, and pre-registration and periodical inspections become standard practice. These are carried out either by an inspector from the flag state itself or by an approved classification society such as DNV, Lloyd's, Bureau Veritas or RINA.

One thing worth remembering: a flag state inspection is not the same as a port state inspection. That is a story for another post, and a good one, so do stay tuned. ⚓

Is an expired registration the same as a Certificate of Withdrawal? Not quite.

An expired registration does not confirm that a vessel has actually been removed from a ships register. A Certificate of Withdrawal does.

That said, some ships registers will accept an expired registration in place of a formal Certificate of Withdrawal and proceed with registering the vessel.

Thinking about chartering a vessel this summer? 🌞

Here are a few things worth knowing before you set sail. 📋️

Chartering can be a wonderful experience, but it does come with risks that are easy to overlook when you are caught up in the excitement of planning a trip. Here is what to watch out for:

✅️ Check the charter agreement carefully. Make sure you understand what is and is not covered, including liability, damage deposits, and cancellation terms.

✅️ Review the insurance cover. Do not assume the charterer's insurance covers you or your guests. You may need separate cover.

✅️ Understand who is responsible for what. In the event of an incident, liability can fall on the charterer, even if you are not the vessel's owner.

You are not alone, many people have found themselves in tricky situations simply because they did not know what questions to ask beforehand.

Are you moving your yacht to a new flag state? You will almost certainly need a Certificate of Deletion.

All flag states ask for this document when registering a vessel that has been registered elsewhere. While some authorities happily accept a digital copy, others require the certificate to be presented with an Apostille.

But what exactly is an Apostille? In simple terms, it is like an international seal of approval. It is a special stamp that confirms the signature on your document is genuine, making it legally recognised in the eyes of foreign officials. Think of it as a VIP pass for your paperwork, ensuring it travels across borders without a hitch.
