We’ve seen the conversations around this clip, and honestly, we think there’s something worth saying.
In some work environments, calling your boss or senior colleague by their first name is perfectly normal. But context matters, and so does culture.
In our environment, addressing someone older or in a position of authority as Sir, Ma, Mr., Mrs. or by their appropriate title is a simple way of showing respect.
So, in this particular setting, we understand why the correction was necessary.
Calling someone “Sir” or “Ma” does not reduce who you are. Respect does not make you less confident, less intelligent or less accomplished.
And this is something we believe strongly in at Kwikpik.
As a customer, if you’re speaking to our CEO, Customer Support Team, Social Media Manager or Customer Experience Team, you would receive the same level of courtesy, patience and grace.
In fact, you wouldn’t be able to tell who is responding to you based on how you’re treated.
Because at Kwikpik, respect isn’t a position. It’s a culture.
And yes, anyone can be confident, competent and assertive while still saying:
“Yes, Sir.”
“Yes, Ma.”
“Thank you, Ma.”
It doesn’t make you smaller.
Confidence without discernment can easily become arrogance.
