*The Current Fuel Situation in Nigeria!*

Our attention has been drawn to the current fuel scarcity being witnessed in many states across Nigeria, especially in Nasarawa, Niger, Abuja, Lagos, Oyo, and Osun, with more likely to be affected in the coming days.

The dire situation faced by the country is attributed to challenges in logistics currently being encountered by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) which says things will normalize in a few days, boasting of a 30-day supply sufficiency. As you may know, the Nigerian state-owned energy firm is the sole fuel importer in the country.

Conversely, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) said the ongoing situation was caused by a lack of sufficient fuel in the country, adding that it could take up to two weeks for things to stabilise.

In addition, IPMAN stated a few reasons that could make the scenario stay longer, including the fact that only a few fuel marketers have been able to renew their licenses (a step required by NNPC Ltd before they can lift products) and ongoing turnaround maintenance at some European refineries.

Plus, the Dangote refinery has yet to begin supplying petrol to the domestic market. It is expected to do so by Q4.

As a result, in the short term, there will be long queues at fuel stations, increased fuel prices as well as hikes in transportation fares, which in turn will negatively impact business activities and the economy at the end of the day.

However, we are optimistic and strongly believe that normalcy should have returned to the market in the coming few weeks though it may take longer than the two weeks that IPMAN projects. This is solely an independent opinion of ours based on a few key parameters that we are tracking.

Hope this helps.

The price of crude oil on Monday hit $130 a barrel, the highest since July 2008, after the United States and European allies considered banning the importation of Russian oil in protest against Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine.

Brent crude futures jumped $12.61, or 10.6 per cent, to $130.72 a barrel by 0449 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude climbed $10.41, or 9 per cent, to $126.09,โ€ Reuters reported.

Mondayโ€™s intraday highs are near record levels seen for both contracts in July 2008 when Brent hit $147.50 a barrel and WTI touched $147.27.

Over the past week, the prices of crude oil rose after the United States and its allies sanctioned Russia over the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia is the worldโ€™s second-largest oil producer, mostly selling its crude to European refineries. It is also the largest supplier of natural gas to Europe, providing about 35 per cent of the supply there.

On Sunday, the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. and its European allies are exploring banning Russian oil imports.

โ€œWe are now in very active discussions with our European partners about banning the import of Russian oil to our countries, while of course, at the same time, maintaining a steady global supply of oil,โ€ Mr Blinken was quoted by Reuters as saying in an interview on NBCโ€™s โ€œMeet the Pressโ€ show on Sunday.

Reuters quoted the CMC markets analysts as saying, โ€œA boycott would put enormous pressure on oil and gas supply that has already felt the impact of increasing demand.โ€

โ€œPrices are likely to rise in the short term, with a move toward $150 a barrel not out of the question,โ€ the analyst said.

The rise is good news for Nigeria which relies on crude sales for most of its revenue. However, it is bound to create more problems for the country as higher prices will make fuel subsidies more expensive, with the likelihood of Nigerians having to pay more for fuel, transportation and goods.
