Reasons for Excess Fuel Consumption in Cars

With the rising cost of petrol, it is important to know the top fuel economy killers. Emphasis will be on possible reasons why vehicles consume more fuel.
1) Spark plugs: The work of this spark plug is to ignite the fuel and air mixture that is needed to power your engine. Spark plugs have their lifespan depending on the grade & product quality but they tend to wear out over time as they are subjected to intense heat which will eventually lead to a loss in efficiency.
2) Ignition coils: Unlike spark plugs, ignition coils are electrical component that supplies electric currents which is measured in volts to the spark plugs. For example, if an ignition coil is designed to produce 10 volts from factory, after extensive use it begins to wear out & at that point begins to supply less voltage to the plugs which will make for an inefficient combustion.
3) Oxygen Sensors: Oxygen Sensors are one of the biggest fuel economy killers. This often triggers the check engine light on your vehicle. A bad oxygen sensor can lead to over a 30% loss in fuel economy & in some vehicle brands it may be worse.
4) Tire Pressure: This is often neglected by most vehicle users. It is important to check your tire pressure at least once a month to ensure you have the right amount of pressure in it. The right amount of pressure will reduce the rolling resistance thereby leading to good gas mileage while lesser pressure (Psi) will increase the rolling resistance meaning you will have terrible gas mileage.
5) Air Filter: Like the tire pressure; the air filter can lead to poor gas mileage but then a lot of drivers don’t take it seriously. Your engine requires a certain quantity of air to run efficiently and the air-filter is responsible for providing that clean oxygen to your engine. A dirty or clogged air-filter will restrict sufficient oxygen from entering the engine which will definitely affect the proper functioning of the engine.
Other culprits could be your engine and transmission overall health, road and weather conditions and other vehicle component.
