--Here’s where container rates will go in extended Iran war--
The escalating conflict involving Iran has significantly disrupted shipping operations in the Persian Gulf, particularly as Iran effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global maritime route.
The closure has caused vessel congestion and operational disruptions across regional ports. Major carriers such as MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM, and Maersk have responded by suspending bookings, canceling sailings, or diverting vessels to manage security risks.
As a result, containers bound for the Gulf are beginning to accumulate at origin ports and could lead to congestion in nearby hubs such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.
Although only about 2–3% of global container traffic passes through the Strait of Hormuz, the temporary removal of vessels and equipment from circulation could tighten global shipping capacity if the disruption continues. Rising fuel costs, emergency surcharges, and schedule disruptions are also pushing freight rates higher, with rates from Shanghai to Jebel Ali already more than doubling in early March.
If the conflict persists, the ripple effects may impact global supply chains, delay shipments, and increase freight costs across multiple trade lanes.
