Quito Airport: Best in Latin America & Caribbean for 5-15 million passengers:

By Anastasiya Simsek -Mar 13, 2024

Quito Airport is recognized as the best in Latin America and the Caribbean for 5 to 15 million passengers. Airports Council International (ACI) World, in partnership with the leading travel technology company, Amadeus, announced the best airports in customer experience worldwide, chosen by passengers, through the renowned Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards.

Mariscal Sucre International Airport achieved recognition as the best airport in Latin America and the Caribbean in the category of 5 to 15 million passengers annually and the cleanest airport in the region in the corresponding measurements to 2023.

The ASQ program is recognised as the world’s leading airport customer experience benchmarking and measurement program. Its approach is based on live research conducted through surveys administered directly to airport travellers, who record their satisfaction levels on the day of travel.

ASQ surveys cover more than 30 performance indicators across critical elements of the airport passenger experience, providing the most complete picture of the passenger travel experience. Ramón Miró, president and CEO of Quiport, the company in charge of the management of the Mariscal Sucre International Airport, said: “These awards are not only a cause for joy for our airport, but they are also important because they reinforce the confidence of passengers in the quality of our services. Additionally, they inspire us to continue innovating, implementing best practices, and continually seeking ways to raise the standards of excellence in the airport industry. I want to express my sincere gratitude to each member of our team and the airport community, whose effort and dedication have made these achievements possible. These recognitions are a reminder that, together, we can reach the highest peaks and continue to be a benchmark in aviation on a regional and international scale.”

Quiport Corporation has participated in the ASQ program since 2018. It is part of ACI’s passenger experience program, and it currently holds level 5, the highest on the scale, along with Incheon airport in South Korea.

In the measurement carried out between January and December 2023, around 1,400 passengers completed the surveys, which were applied to a sample of all flights, destinations, and operating hours at the Quito airport.

The survey comprises 53 questions that cover satisfaction with each process/service, emotions, process times and passenger profile.

The most notable management areas of the Mariscal Sucre airport are:

Cleanliness of the terminal, with a rating of 4.47 out of 5.
Ease of movement within the airport includes items such as signage, screening processes, and security filters, with a score of 4.33.
The service vocation of airport staff covers courtesy and help from all airport staff, including airlines, security, immigration, customs, shops, and restaurants, with a rating of 4.29.
ACI World General Director Luis Felipe de Oliveira said, “We are delighted that in 2023, the ASQ program surpassed 400 participating airports, a record that reflects our members’ commitment to putting the passenger first. We also thank passengers who spent their valuable time providing feedback on nearly 600,000 surveys.

The program’s global growth remarks confidence in its live and scientific approach, making ASQ the reference standard for airport customer experience assessment in the aviation industry. The future success of airports depends on an unwavering commitment to delivering a stellar customer experience at every touchpoint.

In an era where passenger expectations are quickly evolving, excellence in customer service is not just a goal; it is the key to ensuring that airports remain not just gateways but memorable destinations in their own right.” Airports Council International (ACI), the trade association of the world’s airports, is a federated organisation comprising ACI World, ACI Africa, ACI Asia-Pacific and Middle East, ACI Europe, ACI Latin America and the Caribbean and ACI North America.

By representing airports’ best interests during key policy development phases, ACI makes a significant contribution to ensuring a global air transportation system that is safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. As of January 2024, ACI represents 757 members operating 2,109 airports in 191 countries.

UPS to boost global trade with enhanced operations at new hub at Hong Kong International Airport:

Global logistics service provider UPS and the Hong Kong Airport Authority have entered into an agreement that improves UPS service to customers and enhances the company’s operations in Asia with a new hub at the Hong Kong International Airport and near the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

The new hub will serve as UPS Hong Kong’s main facility for processing and sorting imports, exports, and transshipments, to and from Europe, the U.S., and other parts of Asia.

The hub is expected to be completed by 2028 and will be built on a land parcel of 20,000 square metres with direct access to aircraft. The facility is being designed to handle close to 1 million tons of annual capacity, giving UPS and its customers around the world better and more reliable connectivity to Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area1, and the growing Asia Pacific consumer market.

“Hong Kong continues to be an engine of growth and a critical part of UPS’s global smart logistics network,” said Daryl Tay, president of UPS North Asia District. “This new hub, along with our existing operations at Shenzhen Bao An Airport, demonstrate our continued commitment to Asia. We will continue to invest in areas of our network that bring unique value to our customers and create additional growth opportunities for UPS.”

A fully automated facility, the hub will be powered by state-of-the-art sorting and scanning technology and boasts environment-friendly features. This latest investment is part of UPS’s expansion plans to support Greater Bay Area growth, and better serve evolving customer needs and shipping demand across its air network. It also allows UPS to optimize its existing operations in Hong Kong by streamlining some smaller and separately located facilities.

UPS will continue to invest in Asia Pacific to serve its customers with stronger cross-border connectivity, greater capacity, and an industry-leading customer experience. In recent years, UPS has made numerous network and facility enhancements across Asia, including Singapore, Japan, China, Vietnam, South Korea, and the Philippines. UPS also launched UPS Premier, a ‘white glove’ shipping service targeted at healthcare customers who require precision logistics for patient-critical, time- and temperature-sensitive products. UPS Premier is now available in seven countries in Asia, including Hong Kong, with more locations planned for launch next year.

Menzies Aviation, the leading service partner to the world’s airports and airlines, has renewed and secured several new key cargo contracts with airlines at London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) including Thai Airways Cargo, Middle East Airlines, Royal Air Maroc Cargo, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines Cargo and Tarom.

Among the new contracts, Menzies is set to deliver cargo handling and airside trucking services for Thai Airways, the national flag carrier of Thailand. The contract, which includes 14 turns per week, will see local teams oversee the transportation of more than 16,000 tonnes of vegetables and fresh fish from Thailand to the UK.

Royal Air Maroc Cargo, the fast-developing cargo business of Morocco’s national airline, has appointed Menzies to manage its cargo handling at London’s busiest airport, managing seven turns per week. Extending its contract with the aviation services business, Royal Jordanian Airlines, has added cargo handling and airside trucking to its agreement, which currently includes passenger and ramp handling. The extended contract will include 14 additional turns per week, with more than 6,000 cargo tonnes anticipated each year.

Menzies Aviation has also locked in a further five-years with Middle East Airlines, the flag carrier of Lebanon, to provide air cargo handling services and airside trucking for more than 14 turns per weeks, including more than 1,700 tonnes of fresh vegetables from Lebanon.

Building on a decade long relationship, Menzies will also continue providing cargo handling services for SAS Cargo, the leading air cargo carrier to, from and within Scandinavia, managing more than 35 turns per week.
