Monte Alban, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was inhabited over a period of 1,500 years. The terraces, dams, canals, and pyramids were carved out of the mountain and are the symbols of a sacred topography. Nothing like 80 degrees and 8000 steps to balance out all the queso and tacos I’ve devoured this week.

Casa Silencio is the perfect two day addition to any trip to Oaxaca. Part mezcal distillery and part brutalist luxury boutique hotel, with an agave studded landscape and fine dining under dark skies, pick one of their six suites and sink into the silence.

Getting the best seat is easy when your first cocktail is at 5pm and your friends have already done the scouting for the best cocktail bar in town.

Best Ever Travel Experience #9

We’ve taken a gulet around the islands of Croatia three times in the past decade. There are few places in the world I want to travel to twice, let alone three times. That speaks volumes for this beautiful country known for having over 300 days of sunshine a year.

There may not be a better summer adventure than that of a traditional wooden gulet with the family. Summer is coming. Take me back.

Best Ever Travel Experience #10

Antarctica. Bottom of the world, top of my wish list. In 2023, I was able to experience a trip that combined untouched remote parts of the planet, whales, seals, penguins, gulls, glaciers, and a passage across an unpredictable body of water.

There’s nothing like Antarctica.

Our ship, Quark’s Ultramarine, was filled with 130 other like-minded travelers, 199 welcoming crew members, countless engaging guides, a decadent spa, and beautiful cabins with views which meant I never had to miss a thing.

The only disappointment of the trip was that it ended.

There’s nothing like Antarctica. If you find any place to rival it, let me know.

Best Ever Travel Experience #11

When it comes to travel, I’ll choose countryside over city any day of the week. Maybe that’s because I’ve spent the past 35 years living in big cities.

But when I had the chance to spend eight days in Vienna during my daughter’s gap year, I couldn’t get there fast enough. And it wasn’t even enough time. From cathedrals to gardens, palaces to hidden speakeasies, Michelin-starred restaurants to local cafés, Vienna surpassed every expectation.

We lived on cheese, wine, schnitzel, Sacher tortes, and other decadent pastries. We walked, shopped, and descended into subterranean catacombs. And although according to my daughter, I was forever walking too fast, lost, or walking too slowly, it was one of my best ever times with her.

Best Ever Travel Experience #12

In January of 2019, I received a text from a friend of a friend: ‘Happy New Year! Would you like to go gorilla tracking with me in Uganda?’ I stared at the screen for a nanosecond and wrote back, ‘Yes!’

A nanosecond later, I wrote, ‘Wait… what?’

So began nine months of planning that would eventually take us to see the indigenous Batwa Pygmies, through dusty local villages, over the golden savannah of Ishasha, into the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and ultimately, to the magical moment of finding our first family of silverback mountain gorillas.

Is Uganda on your radar? If not, what is? Stay tuned for tomorrow when I reveal my next best ever travel experience.

Sometimes an extraordinary travel experience is a rainy candlelit dinner on the banks of a lake in rural Cambodia. Or, lounging next to a million year old boulder at a pool in the Utah desert. Great travel experiences can be spending an hour with a family of silverback gorillas in Uganda or having a 23-course lunch at a farmhouse in Slovenia.

Each of us knows the events that have defined our travels. It’s not just a luxury hotel room or that Michelin-starred meal (although those are nice!) It’s the ones that inspire our next adventures-the ones we will always remember.

For the next 12 days I’ll be sharing my top 12 travel experiences ever. What are yours?

One of the most popular ways to explore Egypt is cruising the River Nile. There’s just no better way to imagine ancient Egypt than from the water, stopping to roam majestic and crumbling waterside temples, watching fisherman stooped over rickety wooden boats, hearing the distant call to prayer, and feeling the hot sun warm your face.

River life is slow, a sharp contrast to the bustle of Luxor and Cairo. River life is also lazy, where you can read books on heaps of colorful floor pillows, sip mint tea, play backgammon, dine on homemade koshari, while never missing a passing sailboat, a braying donkey, or a water buffalo cooling off in the reeds.

Nour El Nil makes the River Nile even more extraordinary-with only 10 cabins, a welcoming crew, knowledgeable guides, and an entertaining gaggle of guests. (Not to mention more birds than a birder could ever wish for). After five leisurely nights floating up the river, I’m ready to fully embrace the chaos of Cairo.
