Tips for planning a beach workation [Save this post for later!]

If you’re living the WFH life, why not trade your home office for a beachside office for a week or two (or more!)

Dreaming of packing up your laptop and taking it somewhere beachy this year?

Here are my top tips for planning a relaxing (and productive) beach workation.

💻 Research the wifi situation (and have a back-up plan)

Remote tropical beach towns are my ideal vacation spot but are not always the best choice in terms of internet infrastructure.

I’ve definitely had a few experiences with unstable wifi I was luckily able to save myself with my hotspot or by using my phone as a hotspot. (If you’re using your phone as a hotspot as you backup, get a local SIM card, you’ll have the best service this way)

How to research wifi connectivity:

-Ask your Airbnb host/hotel or hostel management for a speed test.

Note: a private accommodation like an Airbnb may be best as in a hotel or hostel you’ll be sharing the wifi with others, so if it’s busy the wifi may not be as strong or fast.

-Find co-working spaces. Again ask for an internet speed test but generally co-working spaces will invest in the fastest and most stable connection available.

-Ask in digital nomad groups online. There are a ton of Facebook groups for digital nomads in places all over the world, I usually join one for a destination I plan to visit and ask for co-working recommendations.

🏝️ Some successful beach workations I’ve had:

-Miami (plenty of locations and has a free co-working space!)
-La Libertad, El Salvador ( had great internet when I was there last year!)
-Tulum, Mexico (staying in town I had great wifi, by the beach it was terrible)
-Bocas del Toro, Panama (staying in town I had great wifi)
-Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
-Cabarete, Dominican Republic

Getting a remote job can change your life!

I used to be a teacher (does it tell you something I don’t have ANY photos of me in my physical classroom even though I was there almost 10 years? 😂)

while I loved my job, it didn’t offer me the kind of life that I wanted.

I used to dream about saving up enough money to quit working for a year to travel but… I had a mortgage (and a mortgage-sized student loan balance 😬) in addition to other responsibilities that made that seem impossible and out of reach… plus, what would happen when that year ended? Go back to work and be miserable again?

I needed a job that fit around my life instead of trying to fit my life around my job.

So, I started applying to remote jobs that I was qualified for with my transferable skills and I got one!

Instead of living for summer, I am LIVING all year round!

And I’m sharing my journey to help you do the same.

I used to be a teacher and now I work in a non-tech role for a tech company (and no I didn’t need to go back to school!)

I’ve never talked about this here but… I’ve struggled with credit card debt in the past. 💳

Like 5 figures struggled. 😬

I’m much more responsible with my finances now, and I trust myself to use credit cards more responsibly. (I am to the point where as soon as I use my card to make a purchase I immediately make a payment on the card for the amount I charged.)

But for a long time, I didn’t trust myself to be responsible with credit cards after the amount of debt I had accumulated.

One way that I was able to be able to travel while still splitting up the cost (without putting it on a credit card) was by using payment tools like pay in 4 option or

With these payment options, I could split the cost of a flight or my accommodation into 4 payments every 2 weeks (I’d usually line them up to come out right around when I got my paycheck)

Since the payments were set up to be made automatically over the course of 8 weeks, I space out paying for a trip but still not put myself in a position where I was accumulating a lot of debt.

Travel credit cards are amazing tools if used properly but if you’ve struggled with debt or are unable to use credit cards, there are other options to make paying for travel more manageable.

Planning a last minute trip to the Southwest? So many popular natural spaces require permits and/or guides to visit now due to increased popularity.

If you’re taking a last minute trip, you may have missed the window to reserve these or miss out on a lottery for booking permits (like what happened to me trying to get an Angel’s Landing permit for Zion National Park)

Luckily for you, there are tons of beautiful hikes and natural wonders a little off the beaten path in case you can’t get a permit for more popular ones.

Here are some amazing slot canyons that you can visit permit free:

- Elkheart Cliffs Slot Canyon (also called Diana’s Throne on AllTrails) near Kanab, Utah

-Belly of the Dragon tunnel slot canyon near Kanab, Utah

-Owl Canyon near Las Vegas, Nevada (just 30-45 minutes from the airport or the strip!) I visited this slot canyon on my way back to the Vegas airport when heading home from southern Utah.

All of these trails are also free to access as well!

Share with a friend and save this for your future trip to southern Utah!

👋 Hi there! I’m Jackie, and it’s been awhile since I introduced myself here.

Leave me a comment and tell me a little about you! Do you work remotely? Or are you looking for a remote job?

A little over a year ago I quit my in-person teaching job for a fully remote corporate 9-5 in Edtech.

The transition has been an exciting one, I’ve learned new skills, challenged myself and I’m enjoying the flexibility and healthy work-life balance my new role has given me.

While I’m not a full-time digital nomad, I’ve taken several workations since transitioning to the remote work life.

I share my journey here to finding remote work, and how I balance working while traveling, to help you in your own remote job search and/or workation planning journey.

If you work US hours, Central and South America are great destinations for your a workcation since there is little time difference (or none!) from your typical work hours.

These cities are all great because they have plenty of coworking spaces and hostels geared toward remote workers.

There’s great nightlife and food to explore in the city in the evening during your off hours and you can take a quick weekend trip to surrounding areas on your day off.

Where have you taken a work-cation?

Do you need more income? Want the improved work-life balance that comes with working remotely?

Instead of looking for a side hustle and spending years growing it to a full-time income, why not transition to a higher-paying remote role instead!

I was a burnt out teacher 2 years ago. Since I started teaching, I had been working extra jobs on the side to have enough money to pay my bills and do the things I enjoyed. Most weeks, I was working close to 80 hours.

I’d wake up at 3:30 am every morning to teaching English online from 4am until I had to leave for work. In the summer, I tried every side hustle imaginable: food delivery, personal shopping apps, selling vacation packages for a travel agency… It was killing me. And those long hours were not sustainable.

I realized I needed one full time job that paid me the salary I needed. Unfortunately, I wasn’t getting that in the industry I was in. So, I pivoted.

Did I go back to school or take additional courses? No, I researched roles that I already had the skills and qualifications for, highlighted my transferable skills (things like my excellent communication skills, data analytics, and project planning) and applied for those jobs.

And I landed my first remote job in December 2021. I increased my salary by $20k in that one move. Now I have the free time to pursue my passions, focus on professional growth, grow my blog, and just relax. (And I got a whole 2 hours of my day back just by not commuting)
