YAQUI NATION OF TEXAS | WE ARE YOEME

There is something fundamental about Yaqui identity that often gets lost when our people are described through the language of other nations.

Traditionally, we do not identify ourselves as Indians, Mexicans, Americans, or by the other names outsiders have created to classify us.

We are Yoeme. We are Yaqui.

Our language itself preserves this distinction.

Yoeme refers to a person of our people. Yoemem refers to our people collectively.

And those who are not Yaqui?

Yori.

A government may record a Yaqui as Mexican.
Another may record that same family as American or “Indian.”

Those words tell us something about who was doing the recording.

They do not change who we are.

We remain Yaqui.
