PS Urges CAA Board to Fast-Track Airport Certification and Strengthen Oversight

Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Bright Kumwembe, has urged newly appointed board members of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to strengthen regulatory oversight and accelerate airport certification.

Speaking during an orientation meeting on civil aviation matters, Kumwembe raised concerns over compromised registry entries, including unregistered and clandestine operations. He stressed the need for an urgent review and possible temporary suspension of the registry to remove noncompliant operators and restore confidence in Malawi’s aviation oversight system.

He further emphasised that airport certification remains one of the sector’s most pressing priorities. Kumwembe advised the board to work closely with the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and Airport Development Limited (ADL) to advance the certification agenda, particularly for the country’s two international airports, to ensure compliance with international safety and operational standards.

He called on the new board to provide decisive leadership in strengthening supervision mechanisms, fast-tracking certification processes, and ensuring that only legitimate and compliant operators are registered under the Malawi flag.
