ABOUT NYIKA NATIONAL PARK
Nyika National Park is Malawi’s largest and oldest protected area, celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity. Sitting high on the Nyika Plateau, the park offers sweeping views, rolling grasslands, and misty evergreen forests, with Nganda Hill rising to about 2,600 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in Malawi.
Wildlife & Biodiversity
The park supports an impressive variety of wildlife, with over 85 mammal species and more than 420 bird species recorded. Visitors commonly encounter elephants, roan antelope, zebra, eland, reedbuck, bushbuck, leopard, and jackal roaming freely across the plateau.
Nyika is also nationally important for bird conservation. Its grasslands host Malawi’s largest breeding populations of Wattled Crane (vulnerable) and Denham’s Bustard (near-threatened), making it a prime destination for bird enthusiasts.
Flora & Scenery
The montane evergreen forests and open grasslands support a remarkable diversity of plant life, including six endemic orchid species found nowhere else. Seasonal wildflowers transform the plateau into a colourful natural garden, especially after the rains.
