Nacala Logistics Strengthens Regional Rail Collaboration at Land-Linked Zambia Conference.

Nacala Logistics, through its operating company Central East African Railways (CEAR), marked a significant milestone in regional transport development during the Land-Linked Zambia Conference held in Lusaka from 23 to 24 April 2026.

On 24 April 2026, Nacala Logistics formalized its commitment to enhancing cross-border rail connectivity by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zambia Railways Limited. MoU was signed by Mr Cuthbert Malindi, MD ZRL and Mr. B. P. Awasthi, Head & COO, Nacala Logistics. The agreement sets the foundation for the operationalisation of the Chipata–Mchinji Railway Line, a critical link in the regional logistics network.

The Chipata–Mchinji line connects eastern Zambia to Malawi’s rail network, providing a direct corridor to the Port of Nacala in Mozambique. Once fully operational, this route will offer Zambia the shortest rail access to the Indian Ocean, significantly improving the efficiency of cargo transportation and regional trade flows.

Historically, the Chipata–Mchinji rail link played a pivotal role in regional connectivity, with the first goods train running in 2014. However, operations were suspended in 2017 due to natural disruptions and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving the corridor inactive for several years. The renewed partnership signals a strong commitment by both parties to revive this strategic route.

Speaking through this partnership, Nacala Logistics continues to demonstrate its commitment to regional integration and sustainable logistics solutions. The collaboration with Zambia Railways Limited underscores a shared vision to unlock the full potential of rail transport as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly mode of moving goods across borders.

The signing of this MoU at the Land-Linked Zambia Conference highlights the importance of strategic partnerships in driving infrastructure development and positioning Zambia as a key player in regional and international trade.

In partnership with African Parks, Nacala Logistics donated beekeeping equipment to communities under T/A Nsanama Group Village Kamwendo in Machinga district as part of environmental conservation and ecotourism efforts within the Nacala Railway Corridor reserve.

Communities surrounding Liwonde National Park and located within a 2km radius of the railway line recently received training in beekeeping. Yesterday, on 15 April, participants were also equipped with essential gear, including bee suits, protective gloves, and gum boots.

Through these trainings and resources, communities are empowered to generate sustainable income through honey production, improve food security, and reduce reliance on activities that may negatively impact the environment. Beekeeping also acts as a natural deterrent to wildlife, helping to minimize human-wildlife conflict while promoting coexistence.

This initiative strengthens the link between conservation, community livelihoods, and safe railway operations along the corridor.

Did you know?

Shifting cargo from road to rail can significantly reduce transportation costs, especially now, as fuel prices continue to rise. Road transport relies heavily on diesel for each truck on the road, and when fuel costs increase, the cost of moving goods rises sharply for businesses.

Rail, on the other hand, is far more fuel-efficient. A single train can move the equivalent of dozens of trucks using much less fuel per tonne of cargo. This means businesses can better manage and stabilise their transport costs, even during periods of fuel price volatility.

Beyond cost savings, shifting to rail also reduces road congestion, and decreases wear and tear on public roads; making it a smarter, more sustainable solution for the future of logistics.

At Nacala Logistics, we are committed to helping businesses navigate rising fuel costs by offering efficient, reliable rail transport solutions.

He is risen! Wishing you a blessed and joyful Easter Sunday filled with hope, love, and new beginnings.

Keeping trains moving safely and efficiently is a true team effort.

From teams on the railway line ensuring tracks are safe and secure, to maintenance crews keeping locomotives and wagons in top condition, to administrative and planning teams coordinating operations behind the scenes; every part of our organisation is connected. Each department plays a critical role, and it is through this collaboration that we are able to deliver safe, efficient, and reliable rail services every day.

Our people share knowledge, support one another, and work together to solve challenges, ensuring that trains keep moving, cargo reaches its destination on time, and passengers travel with confidence. Whether in the field, the workshop, or the office, teamwork is what drives our success and strengthens our operations.

Together, we are not just running a railway, we are connecting industries, supporting trade, and contributing to the growth of the communities we serve.

One team. One mission. Moving the railway forward together.

This March, Nacala Logistics proudly took part in nurturing our environment and strengthening the communities we serve.

We kicked things off in Mwanza, planting 2,000 trees at Michiru Forest Reserve, starting in February through the first week of March, setting the pace for a greener season.

And we kept the momentum going:
12 March – 1,000 trees planted in Nanjoka Community, Salima
19 March – 450 trees planted at Chabwera School in Liwonde

All of this as we marked International Day of Forests on 21st March, a reminder of why this work matters.

Real action, real impact, and a whole lot of green going back into our communities.

In celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s Month, Nacala Logistics, in conjunction with the Railway Workers Union of Malawi (RWUM), hosted a special dinner in honour of its female employees, recognizing their contributions, resilience, and vital role within the organization. The elegant event took place at Amaryllis Hotel, bringing together women from across the company for an evening of inspiration, reflection, and empowerment.

The dinner was graced by the Guest of Honour, Mrs. Jessie Chingóma from the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU), who delivered a powerful and motivating address. She encouraged the women to think beyond limitations and to continuously strive for greater achievements in their personal and professional lives. Emphasizing the importance of ambition and self-belief, she reminded the attendees that they are capable of reaching remarkable heights when they dare to dream big and pursue their goals with determination.

Also speaking at the event was Nacala Logistics Administration and Infrastructure Supervisor, Bertha Kanjere, who shared words of courage and empowerment. She urged women not to shy away from standing up for what is right and to confidently pursue positions of influence and leadership. Her message reinforced the idea that women have a rightful place in decision-making spaces and should actively claim those opportunities.

In her remarks, Mrs. Kanjere also shed light on this year’s Women’s Day theme, “Gain to Give,” explaining its significance and encouraging women to use their growth, knowledge, and success as a means to uplift others. She further provided insight into the origins of International Women’s Day, highlighting its roots in the global movement for women’s rights, equality, and social justice.

The evening served not only as a celebration but also as a reminder of the importance of unity, empowerment, and continued progress for women within Nacala Logistics and beyond. It was a meaningful occasion that left attendees inspired to support one another, pursue excellence, and contribute positively to their communities and workplaces.
