Lokananda Pagoda is one of the four pagodas that enshrine the tooth relic of the Buddha. Lokananda in Pali means worldly joy. According to legend, it was built by King Anawrahta in 1059 AD. Lokananda Pagoda is located on the banks of the Ayeyarwady River, southwest of the capital of Sri Lanka. King Anawrahta received the relic of the tooth relic from the King of Sri Lanka. According to ancient records, King Anawrahta himself descended into the depths of the Ayeyarwady River and placed the pagoda above his head. The king then placed the body on the back of a white elephant, which stood kneeling in front of the Buddha. The white elephant was then lowered and carved. The white elephant carried the tusk and worshipped at the site where the Shwe Si Khun Pagoda is now located, and built the Shwe Si Khun Pagoda and enshrined it. Before doing so, a tusk emerged from the elephant's back. When the white elephant asked for a new one, the elephant worshipped on a hill near the Bagan River and enshrined the tusk, and built the Lokananda Pagoda. In the corridor adjacent to the Aung Takot Pagoda are two men holding a bell and a large wooden pot. A Burmese-style Buddha image sitting on a throne is located in the pavilion adjacent to the pagoda. In the eastern pavilion is a Buddha image carved from a large sandstone block. The image is in the Dhyana Mudra (deep meditation) and is two meters high. On the back of the eastern pillar are two stone inscriptions with the name Lokananda. The name Lokananda is the original name of the ancient temple in Bagan.
