TONZANG IS LIBERATED
19 May, Tonzang: After three days of intense fighting, the Zomi Revolutionary Army - Eastern Command (ZRA-EC) could finally liberate Tonzang Town from Chin National Front/Chin National Army @ CNF/CNA-led (Laiholh/Hakha Pawi militant group) occupied forces this afternoon.
Tonzang Town, the second largest town in Eastern Zogam, fell into the hands of CNA-led occupied forces in May 2024 and had been occupied by them since then. After two years of CNA and its proxies occupation, the town was finally retaken and liberated by ZRA-EC today. During the two year occupation of CNA and proxies the townpeople faced unprecedented hardships and lived with fear under the dracanion rule of CNA-led Chinland Council.
Tonzang Town holds a significant place in the history of Zomi in addition to its contemporary significance as the second largest town of the Zomi community in Myanmar. It was the political seat or the capital of the Kam Hau Dynasty after Ukpipa Kam Hau, the paramount Zogam ruler, shifted his capital from Tedim to Tonzang during the 1800s. Since then the town continued to be the capital of the Kam Hau Dynasty which ceased to exist in 1948 with Ukpipa Pum Za Mang being the last ruler. Tonzang has always been an important town for the Zomi community from even before the British colonial period till today. It is an important educational and political centre of the Zomi community in Myanmar. It is also a town where every section and every dialectical group of Zomi community lives be it Teizang, Sihzang, Zo, Tedim, Saizang, Losau, Dim, Khuano etc.
