Ibn Battuta (1304-1368/69), a Moroccan scholar and explorer, is celebrated as the history’s greatest traveler.

At 21, he began a 29-year journey in 1325, initially for the Hajj, covering over 120,000 kilometers across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe-about 40 modern countries.

A trained jurist, he served as a judge, diplomat, and advisor, hosted by rulers. His travels, documented in the Rihla, describe vibrant societies, from Mali’s empire to China’s ports, with vivid, sometimes embellished, details of customs and trade.

Surviving shipwrecks and serving in Delhi, he returned to Morocco in 1354.

His Rihla remains a vital historical source, cementing his legacy as a cross-cultural pioneer.
