~.Sigiriya Pabbata Vihara.~ 👇

After the Kasyapa era, there is a Pabbata Vihara built by his brother King Mugalan, taking advantage of the beautiful landscape of Sigiriya.

King Kasyapa (477-495 AD) created the kingdom of Sigiriya according to his own method in the fifth century. Eight centuries before that, there was a cave complex where Buddhist monks lived at the foot of the Sigiriya rock. Several carved caves and inscriptions have been found that reveal this.

King Kasyapa was defeated in a battle with his brother Mugalan (496 - 515 AD). The new ruler, Mugalan, moved the kingdom to Anuradhapura. But he did not abandon Sigiriya. The Mahavamsa states that Moggallana built the Dalha temple and the Data Kondanna temple in Sigiriya and offered them to the monks of the Dhammaruchi and Sagaliya sects. Not only that, the Mahavamsa also describes that King Mugalana built the Sigiriya Parvata temple and offered the Mahanama to the Thera at the Dighasanda temple. Pabbata temples are also found in places around Sigiriya such as Pidurangala, Ramakele, Kaludiya Pokuna, Menikdena, and Malasna.

Many archaeologists believe that the temples built around a rock are Pabbata temples. Pabbata temples are arranged in several courtyards, each with a square shape and surrounded by water. The four sacred buildings are built in the highest courtyard. The sacred buildings in the middle courtyard, which is the highest, are located according to a standard. That standard is described in the ancient architectural text, Manju Sri Vastu Vidya Shastra.

The time for offering of Katina Cheevera - thick robes for the rainy season to Buddhist priests who observed “Vas” or the rainy season sojourn ends on Il full moon poya day. Thus a series of meritorious activities connected with “Vas” and Cheevera puja also comes to an end. However, Il full moon poya day is of special significance to Buddhists due to numerous other religious events taken place on this day and during the month of Il. Sending missionaries for the first time for the propagation of Buddhism, conversion of three Kassapa brothers, “Devarohanaya” or descending from the celestial world, and the attainment of Arahant Sariputta’s parinibbana are the significant events that had taken place on this full moon poya day and during the month of Il.
Buddha told the followers that Maithri Bodhisattva would be born as the son of Sakwithi Raja –universal king Sanka in the Kethumathi kingdom during this Maha Badra Kalpa. Brahmani Badrawathi will be his mother. Banyan -Nuga tree will be his Bodhiya.
Maithri Bodhisattva worshipped the Buddha and accepted the Niyatha Vivaranaya. This happened on an Il full moon poya day such as this.

The Nine Arch Bridge in Sri Lanka was constructed between 1913 and 1921 during the British colonial era, primarily as a result of local craftsmanship rather than British engineering. Construction was delayed due to World War I, which diverted steel supplies for the war effort. Consequently, the bridge was built entirely of local stone and cement by a local builder named P. K. Appuhami and his team, a feat that surprised many at the time due to its rapid completion and innovative use of materials.

Initial planning: The bridge was first envisioned by the British to expand the railway network in colonial Ceylon.

War and material shortages: World War I caused a steel shortage, leading to the project being completed without any steel reinforcement.

Local innovation: P. K. Appuhami, a local Ceylonese builder, took over the project and completed it using traditional masonry and local materials like stone and cement.

Completion: The bridge was completed in 1921, a testament to the skill and precision of its local builders. It stands as a remarkable example of colonial-era railway construction.

Durability: The bridge's structural integrity was so doubted by British engineers that Appuhami reportedly offered to lie under it when the first train passed over it to prove its strength, and the bridge continues to stand a century later.

The Knuckles Mountain Range, also known as the Knuckles Forest Reserve, is a mountainous area in central Sri Lanka, straddling the districts of Matale and Kandy.
It covers an area of approximately 81 square miles (which is roughly the size of the cities of Edinburgh or Seattle). The Knuckles Mountains are dramatic, with 34 peaks ranging from 900m to 1900m in height.
The name ‘Knuckles’ was given to the area by early British surveyors, who decided the undulating peaks and folds of the most prominent five mountains resembled the knuckles of a clenched fist. However local Sinhalese people refer to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya or Dumbara Hills, which means ‘Mist-laden Mountain Range’.
The names of the five peaks, should you wish to know, are Kirigalpoththa, Gombaniya, Knuckles, Koboneelagala and Dotulugala.
The Knuckles Forest Reserve is the protected area that covers the whole of the Knuckles Mountain range. Along with Horton Plains National Park and the Peak Wilderness Forest region, it forms Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands.
The nearest major city is Kandy, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) or two hours drive to the southwest. Other, closer (but small) towns around the edges include Matale, Riverston, Rattota, Hunnasgiriya and Rangala.
The whole area was collectively declared a Natural World Heritage Site in 2010.

Adam's Peak, one of the must-visit spots in Sri Lanka, is a huge conical mountain towering over with 2,243 meters height in the central highlands of the country, carrying on its top a sacred footprint equally revered by all religions. Besides being a holy tourist destination, Adam's Peak is extremely popular with tourists for its alluring beauty and unmatched trekking. The peak, the seventh tallest peak in Sri Lanka, is also known as Sri Pada (sacred footstep) and Samanala Kanda (butterfly mountain).
Adam's Peak is mostly seen as a sacred place for all religious groups. On the top, the peak treasures a big rock that carries a huge footprint that is believed to be Lord Buddhas in Buddhist tradition, Sri Rama's in Hindu mythology, and prophet Adam's in Christian and Islamic beliefs. The peak is pretty much attractive with thickly vegetated hills all the way up that facilitates the best trekking experience. Also, the peak is headwaters to four prominent rivers in the country named Kalu, Mahaweli, Kelani and Walawe and various other tributaries and features plenty of waterfalls. Being home to a wide range of unique birds, reptiles, and mammals, Adam's Peak has in possession rich biodiversity consisting of lavish endemic flora.

Adam's Peak, whose history dates back to the pre-Christian era, is special to all religions and expressed in different ways if you ask the locals about the history of this sacred mountain, hence relying on whom you are asking. Buddhists believe that it was the residence of their lord. While Hindus hold that according to their folktale it is in Adam's Peak that Ravana, King of Asura, hid Seetha, the queen of Lord Rama after abducting her from India. Muslims have it that after the forbidden fruit incident from Heaven, Adam directly descended on Adam's Peak. Sun-worshippers are said to have made first offerings here in 140 BC with King Dutugemunu who had given staples to monks at Sri Pada; the karma of which incident is said to have healed him at the deathbed. According to the chronicle of the ancient history of Sri Lanka, the story of Sri Pada has something to do with Queen Varija, daughter-in-law of King Kashyapa. At various points in history, the holy destination had to face setbacks and remain away from public attention.
Simply put the best season to visit Adam's Peak is between December and May when there is less rain in the region and daytime would get pleasant sun all day long. In the southern fringes of the central highlands, where Adam's Peak is situated the safe summer season happens between December and April. During this time, you shall experience a warm atmospheric temperature of 29 Degree Celsius on average with a clear sky. The pilgrimage season in here starts on Duruthu poya day in December and lasts until Vesak poya day in May, the busiest time being in April when the school holidays and Sri Lankan new year holidays happen. So it is recommended to make your pilgrim in the early months for calm and relaxed climbing. Many ascend the mountain at nights, to enjoy the daybreak on the top.

Here at Adam's Peak, there is much more to do than a pilgrimage to this 2,243 meters tall mountain. You shall be enjoying scenic valleys, rustic looking environments, lush foliages everywhere your entire way up the mountain. Possibly this one provides you the best trekking and hiking experience up the incline slopes that consist of 5,500 steps in total. You don't need technical hiking equipment to cover the 4 hours of ascent and 2 hours of decent, but a nice pair of shoes or boots and fitness level. If you are ascending at night in the AM, you are getting the golden opportunity to witness the pure outbreak of sunrise, reaching the summit before 7 in the am, where clouds are passing beneath you. The summit area is reserved for the sacred experience of visiting the footprint, Buddhist monasteries and monks.
In pilgrimage season, there would be plenty of tea shops and food stalls showing up regular intervals almost all the way up to the peak where you could sit for a while getting yourselves deep-fried local snacks, chickpeas, Rotis and coffees and teas made of pure tea powders right out from the plantations. Anyway, it would be better keeping your own food with you if you need to take care of a particular diet. Since most people prefer to climb the peak at nights, the nightlife in here would be busier and interesting. All the way up would be lightened with lamps and tube-lights where in the off-season, the way might be dark and only a few food stalls. There are fresh rooms for answering nature's call here and there all the way up. You shall have a selection of restaurants and hotels in Dalhousie with nice accommodation and food.

There are two alternative mountain feet for you to start ascending to Adam's Peak; the popular one being from Dalhousie, a small village, otherwise known as Nalathanniya and the other one being from Ratnapura, the opposite base of the mountain, which is less common because of longer hours of ascending. To begin from Dalhousie you first need to arrive at Hatton or Maskeliya.

"Vesak", the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world. It was on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., that the Buddha was born. It was also on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away.

The General Assembly, by its resolution 54/115 of 1999, recognized internationally the Day of Vesak to acknowledge the contribution that Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, has made for over two and a half millennia and continues to make to the spirituality of humanity. The teachings of the Buddha, and his message of compassion and peace and goodwill have moved millions. Millions around the world follow the teachings of the Buddha and on the Day of Vesak commemorate the birth, the attainment of enlightenment and the passing away of the Buddha. Siddhartha Gautama is believed to have realized that wealth and luxury do not guarantee happiness. So he traveled as a homeless saint to learn more about the world and saw the suffering of the world. It is believed that after six years of study and meditation he became spiritually aware and reached the goal of finding meaning in life. This is called Enlightenment.

At this point, he became a Buddha, and for the rest of his life he taught his followers his experiences.

Buddha is more of a title than a name, it means one who has attained enlightenment or awakened.🙏🙏🙏

The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred Bo tree, or Ficus religiosa, that stands in the Mahamewna Gardens in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Not only is it the closest authentic living link to Gautama Buddha, it is also the oldest human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date and a recorded history.

About 2,600 years ago, Lord Gautama Buddha sat with his back against an Esathu tree on the banks of the Neranjana River in Bodhgaya, India. It was at this moment, as he sat against the tree, that the Buddha is said to have achieved enlightenment. In doing so, the tree also gained a venerated status. It became known as the Bodhi tree, and pilgrims came to see it even within the lifetime of the Buddha.

Later, in 236 BC, the Buddhist nun Sanghamitta Maha Theri was sent by Emperor Asoka from India to Sri Lanka. With her, she carried a southern branch of the original sacred fig. This branch was ceremoniously presented to Devanampiya Tissa, one of the earliest kings of Sri Lanka whose reign was notable for the arrival of Buddhism. In 288 BC, Tissa planted the branch of the Bodhi tree in his Royal Park in Anuradhapura.

The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, as it became known, has since been cared for and protected by Buddhist monks and dedicated kings. Statues, water canals, golden fences, and walls have been built around the tree over the centuries, and many vows and offerings have been made by Buddhists at the foot of the sacred fig.

At times the tree has faced serious threats, and not only from wild elephants. Two storms in 1907 and 1911 resulted in broken branches. A vandal attacked the tree in 1929, hacking off another branch. In 1985, Tamil Tiger separatists stormed the site and massacred 146 Sinhalese-Buddhists on the upper terrace.

Buddhists in the island have a tradition of worshiping the most sacred Bo tree. It is an annual custom for pilgrims from distant villages to visit Anuradhapura to pay homage to the Sri Maha Bodhi. It is generally believed by Buddhists that the offerings made to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi made a significant and positive difference in their lives. It is also customary for many Buddhists to give birth to their babies safely without any ailments and to place a special vow in front of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi for many other healings. Among the farmers around Anuradhapura, it is a tradition to offer rice prepared from their first paddy harvest to the Sri Maha Bodhi. They strongly believe that such sacrifices will lead to sustainable paddy production without the slightest exposure to pests, including drought and elephant damage.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Aluth Avurudu in Sinhala) is a very important occasion for both Sinhala Buddhists and the Tamil Hindus of Sri Lanka. The uniqueness of this occasion is the celebration of the beginning of the New Year as well as the ending of the old year at the auspicious times stated by astrologers. There is also a time period in between, which is called the Nonagathe (neutral period). During this time, people stop work and engage in religious activities. In many village temples, the chiming of the temple bell is accompanied with the beating of drums to make the people aware of the exact auspicious time to perform each ritual.

Rituals of Aluth Avurudda begin with a bath on the last day of the old year and viewing the moon on the same night. People apply Nanu (a herbal mixture), on their head and body before bathing. This herbal, according to belief, has a purifying effect on the body and the soul.❤️🙏🇱🇰
