Aukana Raja Maha Viharaya is a historic Buddhist temple complex in Sri Lanka, best known for housing one of the island’s most iconic ancient monuments — the Aukana (Avukana) Buddha Statue. This site combines deep religious significance, remarkable ancient craftsmanship, and Sri Lankan cultural heritage.

🗿 Overview & Location
• The temple is located in Avukana (sometimes spelled Aukana) village in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, near the town of Kekirawa and the historic Kala Wewa reservoir.
• Aukana Raja Maha Viharaya grew around an ancient monastic centre and the famed rock sculpture carved into the natural granite rock face.

🕯️ The Aukana Buddha Statue
• The centerpiece of the site is the standing Buddha statue, one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable pieces of ancient sculpture.
• Carved directly from a single granite rock, the statue stands approx. 11.8 m (about 39 ft) tall, and with its lotus pedestal the total height reaches around 12–14 m (40–46 ft).
• Its pose is known as the Asisa Mudra (a variation of the Abhaya Mudra), with the right hand raised to convey blessing and reassurance, and the left hand holding the robe.
• The craftsmanship shows finely detailed robes and a serene expression, reflecting both spiritual symbolism and advanced stone-carving skill.

📜 History & Cultural Significance
• Most historians date the statue to around the 5th century AD, during the reign of King Dhatusena (455–473 CE), when Buddhist arts and architecture flourished in the Anuradhapura period.
• Local legends describe a friendly competition between two sculptors — a master and his pupil — with the master completing the Aukana statue first (while the pupil’s statue at nearby Sasseruwa remains unfinished).
• The name Aukana is often explained as meaning “sun-eating”, referring to the dramatic way morning light illuminates the statue.
• The statue and temple complex are important symbols of Sri Lankan Buddhist devotion and identity, attracting pilgrims as well as cultural tourists.
