*📜 HISTORY:*

*1. Beginning (6th Century BC):*
Originally called "Vijithapura" - built by a minister of King Vijaya. Famous Battle of Vijithapura between King Dutugamunu & Elara happened here.

*2. Chola Period (993 - 1070 AD):*
South Indian Chola kings invaded Anuradhapura and made Polonnaruwa their capital named *"Jananathapuram"*. They built Hindu temples - Shiva Devalaya still there. c1d6

*3. Sinhalese Golden Age (1070 - 1215 AD):*
King *Vijayabahu I (1055-1110)* chased Cholas away and made Polonnaruwa the national capital. c1d6

The greatest king was *Parakramabahu the Great (1153-1186)*:
- Built *Parakrama Samudra (Sea of Parakrama)* - 2,400 hectare massive tank, 14km bund. Sri Lanka became "Granary of the East"
- Built Royal Palace (7 floors), Audience Hall, Gal Vihara - 3 giant Buddha statues carved from one rock

*4. Fall (1215 AD):*
Kalinga Magha invasion destroyed the city. Jungle covered it for 700 years.

*5. Today:*
- UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982
- 141 KM from Kandy
