The Kandy to Ella Train Journey - What You Need to Know
One of the most asked questions we get from travelers planning Sri Lanka is about the famous Kandy to Ella train journey. Here's everything you need to know before you plan.

Current Situation
The full Kandy to Ella train route is currently not operating due to damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The government expects the full stretch to be completed by the end of this year, but we'd recommend checking for updates closer to your travel date as timelines can change.

What's Still Running
The good news is that the most scenic section of the journey - Ambewela to Ella (approximately 2 hours) - is still operating. Many travelers who have done both sections say this part captures the best of what makes this train journey so special.

How to Book
Online ticket reservations open exactly 30 days before your travel date at midnight Sri Lankan time. Demand is extremely high, so book as soon as reservations open.

If you're unable to book online, you can purchase tickets directly at the train station on the day of travel, though availability is not guaranteed.

Book the moment reservations open. This train journey is one of the most popular experiences in Sri Lanka and tickets sell out fast.
