I hate to admit this
But I’m really not a great friend lately

When it comes to friendship
I’m pretty sure I’m falling behind.

Listen, it’s not that I don’t want to show up at the front of the line
It’s just that sometimes I can’t keep up.

I can’t keep up with the group chats.
Sure, I see the messages come through
Usually while I’m at work
Or driving to all the places
And before I know it
Too much time has passed
All I can offer is a “ ♥️”
On messages that deserve a heartfelt response.

I can’t keep up with social engagements
Plans are made
I respond, “I can’t wait to see you!”
But the dates come and go
And somehow my schedule is so wildly misaligned
That I realize too late that I’ve missed the party.

I have a stack of Hallmark cards on my desk.
They read “happy birthday,” or “congratulations,” or even worse
“condolences…”
I bought them with so much heart
But now the envelopes are missing
Or the card’s edges are curling from neglect
And the worry over stale sentiment
keeps me from sending them.

There was a time when I showed up
Right away
Full-force
For all the things

But in this season
For some reason or other
I find myself dropping the ball
and falling behind

But here’s the thing about friendship.

Real. True. Friendship.

It understands.

Enduring friendship doesn’t keep score.
Enduring friendship doesn’t keep time.

Enduring friendship
holds space

Even when we feel like
it’s slipping between our fingers.
Enduring friendship keeps holding on.

I may be in the season of being the friend
Who just can’t keep up.
But my enduring friendships promise
It’s ok.

It’s ok to drop the ball on friendship sometimes

When your hands are too full
When your arms are too heavy
So heavy
that even reaching out
Bears too much weight.

True friendship reminds you
It’s ok to set down the weight of obligation
And lean into the promise
That friendship will be there
Ready to pick up right where you left off.

I may be falling behind today
But I’m so grateful
To have friends who offer
Enduring friendship
Because they know I’d do the same ♥️
